Here’s a little bit more of what to expect from the take on Sonic Unleashed in this month’s issue of Official Nintendo Magazine. Within the feature, you’ll get a nice interview with the game’s lead designer, and quite a bit of juicy information regarding gameplay and plot.
What we found to be especially enthralling about the storyline is that Sonic Unleashed is in NO WAY connected to it’s two most recent installments. Talk about relief (let’s face it, those games were crap)! We’ve been longing for a return to the retro style of Sonic for years, and it looks like SEGA is finally taking heed to our cries.
According to ONM, Eggman builds a new and powerful machine which utilizes the power of the 7 Chaos Emeralds, in an attempt to take on Sonic. However, the machine misuses the power of the emeralds, and changes something inside of Sonic while in his Super Sonic form that changes him into a Werehog during the night hours.
Speaking of this Were-Sonic, an entirely new set of gameplay mechanics are introduced into the Sonic series, where we will basically play a Hulk-ified version of Sonic who is bigger, stronger, and “can toss enemies around like nobodies business”. Instead of spinning, this beast form will move more like an ape, using his long arms to propel himself at a slower speed.
The more familiar form of the blue hedgehog will have his own unique set of abilities, including classical moves such as his Spin and Homing Attacks. Some new abilities include Sonic Drifting, a quick step which allows Sonic to move around objects as he quickly approaches them, and Sonic Boost which will give our protagonist a sudden burst of speed from power rings collected throughout the level.
More familiar faces include both Tails and Amy, but we may perhaps learn of other appearances in Sonic Unleashed down the road.
Remember, April 11th is the day to grab a copy of this ONM! We’ll keep you updated as more information is revealed to us!
