Sonic Unleashed in… 2001?

Photograph of a Sonic Unleashed Poster at E3 2001

Talk about a coinidence! Based on this picture, one might think that Sonic Unleashed has been in development since 2001 (when it was taken at E3 seven years ago).

Is there any chance that this was intentional, or is this simply a really, really lucky fluke?  Let’s hope that E3 2008 brings more promising Sonic Unleashed news.

And now I wait for the Shadow fans to get onto me for the tag line of today’s post.

  1. SegaSonic Says:

This is just a (pretty cool) advertise banner for Sonic Adventure 2. Shadow was ” unleashed” in this game and become Sonics biggest rival.

  2. sonicjam Says:

lol wow thats a fluke alright but looks like SA2 though judging the drawing style

  3. admin Says:

Oh, I understand that this is for SA2 - I just thought the wording was awfully lucky to be the title for their upcoming release. Makes me wonder if “Sonic Unleashed” may have been a name tossed around before the title as we know it was even a sparkle in SEGA’s eye.

  4. Ssonic22 Says:

LOL Coincidence? or something more? I think its a mere coincidence, but who knows, maybe SEGA has been planning this? Im still waiting for SEGA gamers day this March 14th!

  5. admin Says:

    May you mean ;)

  6. flash Says:

Wow, that’s a pretty interesting coincidence.Hopefully not that many shadow fans bash us.

  7. iNAUDiBLE Says:

Ooo, I saw a picture of that banner on Deviantart a while back. Yep, that IS quite a coincedence, as SA2 was the game that Shadow was “unleashed” in…

…and I’m a Shadow fan and I don’t really see anything to get riled up about. :P Just a ridiculously awesome coincidence. XD

  8. chaoscontrol Says:

from my name you can tell i’m a shadow fan
but if shadow isn’t in unleashed i wouldn’t run to my room cry for 8 hours than go to sega and complain(but i would for metal sonic)

  9. supersonicdude211 Says:

I’ve seen this screenshot months ago!

  10. Ssonic22 Says:

@admin yeah may ^^ ; sorry about that

  11. flash Says:

Well it’s good to know that the shadow fans here aren’t like the ones at the sega boards XD

  12. admin Says:

Well, there’s nothing wrong with being a fan of Shadow, I just tend to let my dislike for him (and the other new characters) slip into the posts here, which is why I leave disclaimers or other notes at the bottom of these sorts of things ;)

  13. D2B Says:

Now that I think about it, “unleashed” and “chaos emeralds” are the general plot from the Sonic Adventures and a generalization of what is probably expected.

Sonic Adventure: We learn the positives and negatives of the Chaos Emeralds (Chaos absorbing only the Negative energy and Super Sonic is the positive). The power of chaos was UNLEASHED by a new villian.

Sonic Adventure 2: We learn a lot… All seven can potentially destroy a planet. Chaos Control was introduced, Shadow’s first appearance (like Sonic and no guns anywhere), and the peak before the fall. The power of chaos was UNLEASHED by a double, a character like Sonic, and taught us what the blue blur can do.

Before Sonic Unleashed, noticed the patterns yet? If not, lookie.
    1. Dr. Robotnik (Eggman) gets a new ‘badass’ character to help him.
    2. Each game teaches us that the power of the chaos emeralds have a different effect on a main character.
    3. The Eggman’s ‘ultimate weapons’ are always involving the Chaos Emeralds in an evil way.
    4. Each game show character patterns.
Sonic Adventure: 7 playable non-clone characters.
Sonic Adventure 2: 8 playable characters, half are clones (in the standard, and the same power-ups).
    5. Negative, Positive, Negative and Positive.

“Sonic Adventure 3″ = Sonic Unleashed: Anyone who reads this, must know the general plot of what is going to happen in the game. *cough* The game starts off, after the ‘death’ of Shadow. Sonic hears about Eggman on the news, something threating (but really a bluff). Sonic dashs for the Chaos Emeralds, he has and needs. Sonic goes to Eggman’s factory and to stop Eggman’s plot. Eggman acts like a douche, and steals Sonic’s positive energy, mutating him… Eggman follows through his plan. Sonic goes werewolf and finds Tails or whoever to shout “save the world from Eggman… again”. Earth is crumbling, so Sonic and his friends go out and restore everything to normal or just Sonic and Werehog. At the end, Sonic finds Eggman, they fight, something bigger that is revealed vaugely in the plot comes, and Super Werehog to the rescue. In the end, Sonic loses his Werewolf form and saves the day.

I guess my storyline is partly wrong at some points but it IS a pattern if this game is the true Sonic Adventure 3 and if it has nothing to do with the three Sonic games.

    Edit if you like :)

  14. admin Says:

@ D2B - I won’t edit it… at this point, I don’t think ANYONE besides SEGA has any clue what the whole premise of the game is (besides what they’ve said so far). The only problem with all of what you said is exactly what you mentioned at the end, “if it has nothing to do with the three Sonic games”.

According to SEGA, that’s actually the case here. They’ve claimed to cut off ties from any previous Sonic games, meaning they could really go anywhere with this title.

As for the Chaos Emeralds, those will be in the game, but again, it’s all speculation as to how they will function. We know that Eggman uses them to transform Sonic and break apart the world, and we know that Sonic needs to collect them in order to save the day… but then again, that’s how it’s always been - even from Sonic the Hedgehog 1 (Collecting the Chaos Emeralds that is).

  15. Dark Shadow Says:

Its and advertisement for SA2, no doubt about that. As for Shadow actually being in unleashed, its entirely possible (unless this game actually takes place before heroes). They’ve already annouced that Tails and Amy will pop up, and that Silver will not appear. As well as introducing a new character too. I guess it just depends on whether Sonic is indeed the only playable character (which I doubt). It’ll probably be Sonic and the new character that are playable (like in Sonic Rush), and the rest of the cast are NPC’s.

  16. flash Says:

Now that I think about, it would be a pretty good idea if SU took place sometime between SA2 and sonic heroes.

  17. D2B Says:

    @admin

I’m just guessing the pattern because of Nintendo magazine stating the facts of not being apart of the last 3 games and intentially being Sonic Adventure 3. Then again, you’re right about that and the fact it can go anywhere with the plot, even something simple and a plot patterns from all Sonic games. When a new bit of information comes, expect me to explain it. :)

  18. admin Says:

Hey, I’m always interested in intelligent speculation D2B ;) Never feel shy to post your thoughts here!

  19. *SOS Says:

Boo! shadow should be left out of unleashed. Boo! Kill him off! BOO! If they keep shadow around they can at least make it official that he can travel at the speeds sonic can. I mean, Come on! Hover skates that allow him to skate at the speed of sound? yeah In his dreams! They should make his shoes malfunction, then stick em up his cloned a** and see how fast he is then! gah!

  20. *SOS Says:

woops ::edit:: i mean “CAN’T” he can’t travel at the speeds sonic can.

  21. Mynameisonic Says:

“I mean, Come on! Hover skates that allow him to skate at the speed of sound? yeah In his dreams!”

I mean, Come on! Red shoes that allow Sonic to run at the speed of sound? yeah In his dreams!

  22. B gal Says:

@SOS: There’s no other info for other characters in Unleashed except for Robotnic and Sonic. Heck, I bet this picture wasn’t taken recently.

  23. *SOS Says:

?… sonic’s shoes isnt what makes him run fast …

  24. admin Says:

@ B gal - There is actually quite a bit more than that which SEGA has confirmed. Amy, Tails, & Knuckles are for sure going to be making appearances. We also know that Silver is not going to be making a return in Sonic Unleashed.

Also, the picture was taken in 2001 for E3 back then, it’s not related to SU in any way, just found it amusing that they chose the word “Unleashed” back then, and again now.

  25. iec Says:

admin u must like shadow just think your sonic the warehog shadow finds him and u get to beat the livin daylights out of him

  27. Dark Shadow Says:

@admin: I thought it was only tails an knuckles confirmed, no mention of amy yet.

@sos: Have you played Sonic labyrinth?

  28. chaoscontrol Says:

LEAVE AMY OUT OF UNLEASHED LIKE SILVER

  29. admin Says:

@ Dark Shadow - You’re thinking of Play Magazine’s coverage. Sounds like you missed our writeup from Official Nintendo Magazine:

    http://www.campsonic.com/2008/04/09/more-details-from-onms-sonic-unleashed-preview

@ chaoscontrol - I think a lot of people are going to agree with you there, but Amy is definitely confirmed for SU.

  30. Osnic Says:

I’m a Shadow fan, and I don’t care if anyone says ” Please. Don’t let Shadow be a part of Sonic Unleashed. The only thing that’s important is the gameplay and a good story.
But I hope they put Shadow in that onlinemode thing.

  31. admin Says:

There has not been a confirmed online mode as of yet. I think it’s just one of the heavily requested features around here.

  32. chaoscontrol Says:

    NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. Eprahim Says:

Lawl. That was actually for SA2.
