Balloons in Sonic Unleashed?
With how fast things were moving in that Sonic Unleashed gameplay footage unveiled by IGN a few days ago, it was pretty easy to miss interesting elements shown in the video. There were a few things that caught the eyes of our fans (including the clock tower’s stunning resemblance to Big Ben in London), but one of the things that really slipped by a lot of our viewers were the balloons.
Yes, the Balloons… I’m no nut… I know I saw them.
To prove it, I’ve taken the time to take screenshots of the 12 I managed to count in the video (you can see them after the jump). As to what there function will be in Unleashed, it’s hard to say for sure, but they do appear to give Sonic a boost when he hits them. Whether they will be used to help guide the player in the right direction, or lead Sonic to secret, otherwise unaccessible areas is anyone’s guess at this point.
Anyways, I wanted to get everyone’s thoughts on how you see them being used. Also, point out anything else you may have noticed that the rest of us missed on our first… or thirty-first viewing.

Looks like you can lock onto the balloons!

This one was hiding from me… but I found it.

A path to an otherwise inaccessible path?

Maybe those balloons help Sonic jump to higher areas. That’s the only thing I can think of. Kinda like the balloons in Sonic Heroes, except they probably don’t have power-ups in them.
Wow… can’t believe I didn’t notice a single balloon after the amount of times I’ve watched it now… I’m watching it again to make sure…
Yeah, there they all are. Awesome. One thing that’s bugging me about these gameplay videos is it seems as if when Sonic boosts he becomes completely invincible. He’s just plowing through enemies without so much as missing a step. At least with a spin dash it makes sense because he’s all curled up in all ball with spikes flying everywhere. This is just running headlong into things. Anyone else feel like this or am I just being nit picky as usual?
@Sonicman:
actually i noticed on youtube when you click at 1:14 he does pop the ballon and sonic sort of floats/glides for a while
ps. here is the video that i clicked at 1:14 that i saw it popped http://youtube.com/watch?v=bPvLVg_qNfg
@Pickles:
Well… this game is like Sonic Rush. Yes, Sonic is basically invincible while boosting. Sonic Rush is my personal favorite… I guess, it’ll all come down to whether you like Sonic Rush or not.
When boosting, it looks like you could crash into a wall, or spikes if you aren’t careful.
Someone has uploaded the HD version of that gameplay footage from IGN over at Rapidshare. It’s probably wrong doing something like that, but I’m guessing most of you will enjoy it anyways:

Heh. Of course this place is reliable. Especially when scans of REPUTABLE MAGAZINES ARE PLACED IN with posts that reveal new info.
Hmm… I really do want to see some gameplay footage for the Wii version… *hopes Dimps does a good job on it and that they do push the Wii system to its limits*
Actually, I wouldn’t mind if they didn’t include motion sensing at all in a Wii version… after all, Sonic 2 (which I’m sure we’ve all played and loved) had no motion sensing, and everything was done with button inputs, and the game was still awesome!
Dimps is a good developer… but I don’t think they have the hedgehog engine. I do not agree with this “do everything in 1 year” that Sega does for their games.
I wonder if the Wii and PS2 version will be equal?
@Pickles:
Well, He could easily run out of boost and come across enemies, so that’s where the spin dash comes in.
The gauge is powered diffirently in rush,so flow and ring collecting is key.
As long you maintain that,sonic can boost alot,but if you mess up,you have to think of someting.
And this is early footage,remember.
Did anyone comment on those weird yellow robots at the end of the video who seemed to be dropping smaller ones?
they remind me of egg genesis.
hey everyone, I was just re reading the sonic unleahed plotline and I know this is kind of off the point but I was just wondering. The plot starts with eggie waking a slumbering east from the center of the earth and then skip one or two action scenes turns our favourite blue blur into a werehog. When has eggman eva had a mecha that could do that? well i was wondering, what if this slumbering beast is this wolf thing? Perhaps this has been previously speculated and i’m a little behind the times but its just a brainstorm.
Soz if this sounds stupid
how embarasingi cant belivee i missed them lol.
Good eye! =]
does anyone as an idea how would it be the wii and ps2 version?
No idea,but I think the wii version will look a bit like secret rings,and the ps2 version a bit more like heroes.
Does anyone know how to enter the picture i drew for the contest, it would be deeply appriciated.
Nevermind. Got it.
If my memory does serve me correct, in one of the old sonic games, if you jump on/attack one of the balloons, you would get ten rings. Maybe they are just a way to keep you ring energy consistently running. Or maybe im just crazy. Idk.
@ admin:
I heard a few days ago how you said that Wikipedia said Camp Sonic wasn’t a reliable source. Well, I posted a link to the Facts Unleashed Page on the Wikipedia Sonic Unleashed page, and in a hidden comment (only visible when the page is edited) put this:
“Camp Sonic has a list of reliable sources, and if it is wrong, replace this comment and post why.”
I have been checking on the page every day to see if it was changed. Today, I noticed it was removed. I checked the hidden comment and it said this and I quote:
“Camp Sonic: Fan site; information in this article is all reliably referenced in the “references” section so no further sources needed. If there is *reliable*, new information from that site that isn’t already in the article, it should be included in the article itself (with original source: i.e magazine or URL) and not in an external link.”
I hope this answers your questions regarding Wikipedia.
Now BTT, I never realized those balloons until after I read this article. I can’t believe I didn’t catch them. Maybe they are to get to new areas?
That solves that.
Besides,wikipedia’s and our goals differ a bit,seeing as it needs to be 100% sure of it’s information.
The way they said it was just unpleasant.
And I haven’t seen the high europe in 24 hours.
I deserve punishment :P
Just kidding,I did’t really be on the internets much today,and the video is awesome,but after so many times of seeing it,I will not really go to the site to watch it.
I guess we have another month of total silence of sega now..
hey admin I know this is not Unleashed material, but there have been a lot of rumours of a so called “Sonic Attitude” game for the DS, they are speculating that it will be shown in E3 http://www.tssznews.com/2008/06/20/rumor-alert-sonic-attitude-coming-to-e3 , http://gonintendo.com/?p=46828 I know its not a fact but I thought you might want to know it =3
@Ssonic22: I saw some stuff regarding Sonic Attitude earlier today, but I’m afraid of saying anything quite yet. There are a few obvious errors on the list, leading me to believe that this could have just been… you know… made up.
@admin:
ok, youre right they are just rumours. oh well well see in these days if its true
Thanks for this I never woulda noticed fer this article!
I go here to camp sonic looking for updates every day, all you fags saying this place is unreliable don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about lol
Are there any details of what type of game it is?
A platformer would be surprising..
If you take the rush games into acount…
@dragonite:
nope no details mentioned, we dont even know if its real, but they say it would complement Unleashed for the DS
Okay, I have to know. What architect in his right mind would place speed pads all over his buildings. Spikes too! That’s a saftey hazard!
«SONIC ATTITUDE» must be another game they are planing
I think that i doesnt has relation to the sonic unleashed
Because its fo nintendo DS
@Mike:
yes,sonic is sure messed up.
But it could be that te robots build them.
sonic should go back to his home
sonic should go back to his classic – games
@Nano:
Which is wat he is doing,save some nightly troubles.
i was wondering when SEGA is going to put some videos in night stages.
I am really curious how would it be his werewolf form.
Maybe it will be scary.
A video of a night stage would be ok, but what I really want to see is a video of Wii gameplay. I’m still worried about Wii version’s graphics >_<
@Mike:
Mike said “what architecture in their right mind will build spikes…”
Actually, Mike may have a point. I was watching a kung fu movie. And every building, or fight scene seemed to have spikes… waiting for a ninja to get kicked into.
It is possible that Sonic is running through kung fu scenes. No ninja has been kicked into the spikes yet.
Now that’s a good one. O_o
some are blue some are green some are red maybe they all do something like blue speeds you up red helps you do your ring boost etc.
I only have a opinion so don’t get on me about it its just why aren’t they all blue? So they wouldn’t be the same color so I’m just thinking but I really have no idea oh and I saw something in the last photo
@Maguire the hedgehog:
Why they aren’t all blue…
For the sake of variation?
Apologies for not being on, working on the pic is…time consuming.
Hmm, well, everybody has said what the balloons should be, and I don’t know what more can be said…maybe hitting the balloons get yourself more points to your score? Collect enough, get an extra life? Hmm…
Yeah, and you got more stuff than Wikipedia does, so this site wins in that regard.
maybe each color gives a temporary strength like in the video it seems that when the blue one was popped and blue bubbles came out and give sonic speed and the yellow one seems to make him bounce
NOte: this is my opiniion it is not a fact
My guess would be you can doing a homing attack on them and either get extra points or they bounce you up.
I was recently playing through Sonic 3 today, and got to the carnival level. There are balloons in multiple spots. And in the old game, along with the gameplay video, they are clumped together in twos or threes. And in Sonic 3, when u hit them, they throw you up into the air about one and a half times higher than usual. So it looked like, in the video, if you were to hit one of these balloons, you would be thrown into the next one. In Sonic 3, they were used to get things like Fire Shields, Water Shields, rings, or anything. It looks as if the same thing is going on here.
Would this game get shields again?
they where very usefull in the past,so I would like it.
Mostly sa2 used them because of checkpoints.
And in heroes team rose almost always has a shield because of teamblast and minor danger…
Sorry, but are you guys thick or something? On the screenshot 4th down from the top he jumps into one of these balloons and it boosts him into the air (you would know this if you paid attention to the movie). You can also tell by the places that they are are found (especially on the last few screenshots). Just like Sonic 3D Blast.
ok this is a bit of new info, apparently Nintendo of Europe listed the games for 2008 wich surprised many fans with titles like Sonic UNLEASHED for the DS and Beijing 2008 for the wii, and SEGA came to the rescue confirming there WONT be a Sonic Unleashed for the DS or Beijing 2008 for wii, oh well, I just thought it could b newsd heres the list http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/2008/noe_announces_summer_2008_release_schedule_8775.html so yeah…I personally think they WILL make a DS game but not unleashed, maybe the so called “Sonic Attitude”
@Espio.VX:
Yes,this was noted,but we are speculating possible other purposes.
Well what we all noticed is that they give highet but we can’t see what they might give or not because the HUD is hidden in the video ( you know the HUD right? the time, life indicator and the speed meter XD ). If SEGA took the ballons idea from sonic rush like they did with the sonic boost then these ballonies might give us both rings amf highet. What do you think? ;)
NEWS UPDATE: If you go to Sonic Stadium, they’re saying that there’s going to ba a DS version of Sonic Unleashed. Investigation?
@Hannah the Echidna: OY. I’M SORRY, I’M SORRY, I read it too quickly… SEGA said that there WON’T be a DS version and that it was Nintendo’s slip. Oops… my slip, too.
@Hannah the Echidna:
yeah…thats what I said 5 posts ago -_- xDD too bad a sonic unleashed for the DS wouldve been great
http://www.campsonic.com/wp-content/gallery/ign-europe-screens/sonic-run-on-roof.jpg
I’m just throwin out Ideas but could that row of strings indicate that a form of light dash will be possible
@John: While SEGA hasn’t confirmed or denied that ability yet, I can say with a bit of certainty that those rings specifically do not allow for a light dash. I found that segment in the video (1:33ish), and Sonic simply performs an ordinary jump.
