Camp Sonic

Sonic Unleashed Featured in LEVEL Magazine and PS2 UK Mag

I usually don’t post one thing right after another, as I want to give things a chance to soak into the minds of our readers before blowing their mind with something completely new… but I don’t think this can really wait.  If you missed our post earlier this morning, be sure to check it out, cause Sonic Unleashed might win a Golden Joystick Award.

Alright then.  Moving On.

Turns out that we haven’t seen the end of all those fancy magazine previews just yet.  I was notified of a new scan this morning in Swedish “LEVEL” Magazine (issue 27, page 82), as well as a new PlayStation 2 Official Magazine UK featuring the hedgehog on the front cover.

The text in the Swedish magazine simply says “Sega’s back at home”, and reveals that LEVEL will have more information in their next issue on July 22nd (issue 28).  That’s a rough translation folks.  Not an expert at Swedish (that’s what Google is for).  We’ve got the scan after the jump thanks to Chaos Blast!

Very little information from the PS2 Mag has hit the internet as of now.  I see that Shadzter over at TSS grabbed the magazine and has said very little new information is revealed. He’s kindly typed up an interview in the magazine between them and Sonic Unleashed Producer Akinon Nishiyama:

OPS2: What prompted you to return the Sonic series to its 2D roots? Was it something Sonic Team wanted to do, or was it more about fan feedback?
AN: It is true that since Sonic turned into a 3D game, 2D Sonic gameplay was lost, which was a shame for the development team. So it was our strong desire to include both 2D and 3D to make a more complete game.

OPS2: What kind of split is there between the 2D and 3D sections?
AN: Although 3D areas and 2D areas are clearly divided, the transition takes place in a seamless and smooth movement of the camera. We are still deciding what the split will be between the sections.

OPS2: Will there be any kind of free-roaming hub like there was in Sonic The Hedgehog (PS3/360), or is Unleashed set up in a classic Zone structure like the original games?
AN: This time Sonic travels around the world and in the course of this, he visits villages and towns. The player can click on icons to talk to the villagers or get information, then move on to the action stages.

OPS2: Are there any other familiar characters from the Sonic universe making an appearance in Unleashed, and if so, will you be able to play as them?
AN: We might see some characters appear, but this time, it’s based on solo adventure where Sonic tackles one task or another using his various abilities. That said, friends still play a big role for Sonic!

OPS2: What role do rings play in the game? Are they just collectables, or do they have other uses?
AN: If Sonic collects rings at a certain pace, his speed will go up. If he successfully collects them without getting hit by enemies, he’s able to run faster. Also, collecting rings will enable Sonic to activate the Boost action to accelerate to his maximum speed in a flash.

OPS2: Have you felt limited by the PS2 hardware during the game’s development? Is there anything you might have to cut?
AN: The PS2 version is designed to fit PS2.

OPS2: For you, what is the best Sonic game ever made, and why?
AN: Sonic Adventure, because it’s a kind of festuve game to which we threw ina ll the different elements. Also, the “Sonic Rush” series which pushed 2D Sonic to the next level and made it a high quality game.

OPS2: Is Unleashed the future of Sonic games, or do you think the series will return to full 3D?
AN: We hope to evolve the traditional Sonic game style to new generation, while establishing this as a whole new series with new possibilities.

We still don’t have scans from the mag, and may just give out some Camp Sonic pins to whoever can send some our way first ;)

Again, LEVEL Scan is after the jump!

The Space Colony ARK technically wasn’t one of Eggman’s bases, his grandfather worked on it, and Eggy hijacked it, but other than that, it was simply a research base…with a gigantic freakin’ planet destroying cannon inside. :P

I dig the Egg Carrier. (I’d love to see how the fans that believe that the earlier games were more lighthearted would explain the freakin’ Death Egg. Which also has a gigantic freakin’ planet destroying cannon inside. :P )

Ha, the poses that are shown for the magazines are sooooo Sonic. The cover of the PS2 Magazine reminds me of the idling position for Sonic in Sonic 1. Tappin’ his foot at ya. Memories<333

They should include a bonus level, like they did in Sonic Adventure 2. A level from the past Sonic games redone Unleashed Style. If it could be any level what would it be?

I would love to see Final Zone from Sonic 1, just because it made me so mad that i could not beat it, and it felt good when i finally did, because it made me a true Sonic fan.

What level would anyone else like to see?

You know whats been missing in the games, an underwater level for Sonic. I know they had a few for Knuckles and Rouge, make Sonic go through an underwater level. Either as his normal self, or the beast form.

They should include a space level, like the moon or Mars, hell they could make Sonic run on Saturn’s Rings, talk about a speed run.

If they took out the problems, and gave it lots of new features and remade levels,it would be cool.
Silver would be better with a simple target marker..
