I usually don’t post one thing right after another, as I want to give things a chance to soak into the minds of our readers before blowing their mind with something completely new… but I don’t think this can really wait. If you missed our post earlier this morning, be sure to check it out, cause Sonic Unleashed might win a Golden Joystick Award.
Alright then. Moving On.
Turns out that we haven’t seen the end of all those fancy magazine previews just yet. I was notified of a new scan this morning in Swedish “LEVEL” Magazine (issue 27, page 82), as well as a new PlayStation 2 Official Magazine UK featuring the hedgehog on the front cover.
The text in the Swedish magazine simply says “Sega’s back at home”, and reveals that LEVEL will have more information in their next issue on July 22nd (issue 28). That’s a rough translation folks. Not an expert at Swedish (that’s what Google is for). We’ve got the scan after the jump thanks to Chaos Blast!
Very little information from the PS2 Mag has hit the internet as of now. I see that Shadzter over at TSS grabbed the magazine and has said very little new information is revealed. He’s kindly typed up an interview in the magazine between them and Sonic Unleashed Producer Akinon Nishiyama:
OPS2: What prompted you to return the Sonic series to its 2D roots? Was it something Sonic Team wanted to do, or was it more about fan feedback?
AN: It is true that since Sonic turned into a 3D game, 2D Sonic gameplay was lost, which was a shame for the development team. So it was our strong desire to include both 2D and 3D to make a more complete game.OPS2: What kind of split is there between the 2D and 3D sections?
AN: Although 3D areas and 2D areas are clearly divided, the transition takes place in a seamless and smooth movement of the camera. We are still deciding what the split will be between the sections.OPS2: Will there be any kind of free-roaming hub like there was in Sonic The Hedgehog (PS3/360), or is Unleashed set up in a classic Zone structure like the original games?
AN: This time Sonic travels around the world and in the course of this, he visits villages and towns. The player can click on icons to talk to the villagers or get information, then move on to the action stages.OPS2: Are there any other familiar characters from the Sonic universe making an appearance in Unleashed, and if so, will you be able to play as them?
AN: We might see some characters appear, but this time, it’s based on solo adventure where Sonic tackles one task or another using his various abilities. That said, friends still play a big role for Sonic!OPS2: What role do rings play in the game? Are they just collectables, or do they have other uses?
AN: If Sonic collects rings at a certain pace, his speed will go up. If he successfully collects them without getting hit by enemies, he’s able to run faster. Also, collecting rings will enable Sonic to activate the Boost action to accelerate to his maximum speed in a flash.OPS2: Have you felt limited by the PS2 hardware during the game’s development? Is there anything you might have to cut?
AN: The PS2 version is designed to fit PS2.OPS2: For you, what is the best Sonic game ever made, and why?
AN: Sonic Adventure, because it’s a kind of festuve game to which we threw ina ll the different elements. Also, the “Sonic Rush” series which pushed 2D Sonic to the next level and made it a high quality game.OPS2: Is Unleashed the future of Sonic games, or do you think the series will return to full 3D?
AN: We hope to evolve the traditional Sonic game style to new generation, while establishing this as a whole new series with new possibilities.
We still don’t have scans from the mag, and may just give out some Camp Sonic pins to whoever can send some our way first
Again, LEVEL Scan is after the jump!

That LEVEL scan looks awesome to me.
The interview was not really a newsbringer..
Expect for one thing:The player can click on icons to talk to the villagers or get information, then move on to the action stages
What does this mean?
The scan looks GREAT!
No new info but… something attracted my attention:
“The PS2 version is designed to fit PS2″ O.o …
Could Dimps work in Wii and PS2 separately, without losing their similitudes?
Perhaps the PS2 version will not be a direct port… but I doubt it…
@dragonite: I have the same doubt. =P
Yeah, that new render of Sonic is incredible. It looks like he’s fighting Robotnik’s mech.
OH NO not free roam **** again! DELETE that free-roaming right now sega! It slows down video games and is completely unfitting for a sonic game. Sonic games need to be fast paced with little interruption except for short cuts scenes, that’s all. Think SonicAdventure2batte
F*ck yeaaaaa…
Hi there!
Just wanna say that I live in Sweden and will definitely pick up that issue of LEVEL
@PowerOutage: I, for one, enjoy free-roaming and traveling/goofing around with no time limit. It gives the game more of a replay value. Sometimes, I’ll pop Sonic Adventure into my gamecube and just mess around in adventure mode! I love blocking traffic! he he.
THAT Level Scan has such high graphics! This game looks so promising too. I can’t decide to get it for Xbox 360 or Wii. Anyways, nice level scan!

While I won’t be getting this version of SU, I did notice something that might relate to all the versions:
“As Sonic collects rings, his speed goes up..”
His speed goes up just for collecting rings, and not at the RATE he collects them. Does this mean we could go TOO fast to control?
Just me and my nitpicking…
I would like to see this magazine article when it comes out.
I actually don;t mind a overworld if it’s optional,but I wonder what the icon clicking meant….
I want to run free.
YAY, Sweden!
Wow free rom! I love Soic Adventure beacuse it was free roam and funnt action stages.
I can’t wait!
@PowerOutage: SEGA has already said that the game will be played as fast as the player wants, which leads me to believe that free roaming will be more of a feature that’s there for those who WANT to use it.
@Vozo: PLEASE Help us with next months issue! I just send a quick email your direction!
Well they said clicking ( nooooo! ) does that means we control a cursor in the adventure feild telling sonic where to go? please admin or anyone just say something and prove me wrong.
I actually wonder how sonic keeps his shoes so shiny…
what the heck i know its one of eggmans robots and it’s night i guess this was before he got turned into a werewolf
i do want to have new trailers and screenshots
i am sooooo impatient for that to happen….
it seems that sonic in that footage looks like he is doing a move
maybe its «SONIC DRIFT»..
the photo looks really cinematic
u said it nano
Judging from the amount of detail in the scan, I’d say it’s from a cinematic rather than gameplay. I used it in a new wallpaper I’ll upload soon =)
hmm..cool scan! LEVEL looks awesome!
err..I agree with Azure Blue “The PS2 version is designed to fit PS2″ 0__o
@admin:
yesss new wallpaper is coming!!!!
I love those wallpapers^^
In that scan from the magazine, it looks like Sonic’s sliding right under one of the bosses from the game. Although, that’s just my thought. Also, I loved the picture of Sonic on the magazine, holding the mag itself and looking at us, as if to say, “What the heck?”
@dragonite:
He takes very good care of them.
LOL!!! Just when I thought : “Ok lets check out Camp Sonic…but I really doubt theres something new…” and I get this!!!! thats just sweet! that image is lovely!!! him sliding down a robot i think… and that special render, with him tapping in his classic pose…just made my day =3 and cmon everybody its time to vote 4 SONIC UNLEASHED!
Admin, if the free roaming is optional that’s great.
Awesome new screen! I can’t wait!
No Problem! I’m glad I could do my bit for such a brilliant website.
The scan… Could it posibly be another scene from the CGI opening? Because if you look in the background, it’s night, and he’s not in his Were-form.
@Chaos Blast: yeah i thought so too
Hey Admin i just made a wacky connection.. u know the 9 pics of the CG taken from Sega’s FTP servers.. well look at the fifth image then look at the level scan it’s the same robot! im not sure if u already knew but i was wondering if anyone thought so too
Hey admin how are you doing? Well as you said this game is promising and actually it is
but there is something that is makes me worried. ( on the interview: if sonic successfully collects rings he will run faster) well they said the same thing on sonic 2006 but it wasn’t true. Did sega actually said that or it was just a rumor? i hope they won’t screw up at the last minute. ( and folks i think SEGA has spies so don’t say something stupid that will make sega react to it in developing the game XD )
All i hope for is Super Sonic in normal levels
when sonic is turned into a werewolf i bet you have to escape eggmans base as the werewolf thus creating the first level or maybe u fight eggman as supersonic, i cant wait to travel around in hubs again its gonna be so cool…
I think if they have other characters from the series, they should be found mainly in the hub or town stages, leave the levels to Sonic. Use the other characters to move the story, and leave them the role of providing information and not to get in Sonic’s way.
Yeah i think the 5 percent allocated to the other playable cjaracters will be used in town stages and yes i think they won’t get in sonic’s way
I hope they DEMO alot at E3. and provide alot of images and information about the game. Im really hoping for a DEMO on the WII, PS3, and 360 marketplace.
yeah they gotta release a PS3 demo soon i mean come on i want a small taste of how the games gonna feel
I agree qith you people about the demo
but i don’t think it will be released so soon XD
Sorry i meant with not qith XD
I know it may not happen, but if the stages could have weather effects, rain, snow, wind, fog. That kind of effect on the levels and town stages, would make the game beautiful.
If they remade Sonic Adventure Next Gen, would anyone buy it?
If they took out the problems, and gave it lots of new features and remade levels,it would be cool.
Silver would be better with a simple target marker..
Which one of Dr. Robotnik’s air ships was the coolest?
A. Death Egg Ship (Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles)
B. Egg Carrier (Sonic Adventure, Sonic 06)
C. A.R.K (Sonic Adventure 2)
i really hope at least there is no glitches in this game well the director did say that the levels were designed so it wasnt possible to fall off the world randomly
oh and the Egg Carrier was the coolest equipped with a super laser beam piloted by eggman and even had an adventure field and entire level on it
@ Admin or anyone else So i wanna startoff a little poll what would be ur favorite possible or existing stage in Sonic Unleashed from all the Continents the Big 7 are,1-2 North and South America,3 Africa 4 Asia 5 Europe 6 Antartica and 7th Australia
aiight say ur thoughts
They should include a space level, like the moon or Mars, hell they could make Sonic run on Saturn’s Rings, talk about a speed run.
A.R.K
I liked it’s atmosphere,trough I have never played SA.
The egg carrier is cool to.
You know whats been missing in the games, an underwater level for Sonic. I know they had a few for Knuckles and Rouge, make Sonic go through an underwater level. Either as his normal self, or the beast form.
@Sση¡Ć ΓħЄ ĦeÐġeħōӘ:
could work with 2d being added now.
They should include a bonus level, like they did in Sonic Adventure 2. A level from the past Sonic games redone Unleashed Style. If it could be any level what would it be?
I would love to see Final Zone from Sonic 1, just because it made me so mad that i could not beat it, and it felt good when i finally did, because it made me a true Sonic fan.
What level would anyone else like to see?
GREEN HILL ZONE
aside of being generic,it would be a good test of this take on 3-d sonic is a sucess compared to the SA2:B (and others like it) one
First Wii Screens just released. Posting in a second folks.
Update:
First Sonic Unleashed Screenshots for the Wii
The Space Colony ARK technically wasn’t one of Eggman’s bases, his grandfather worked on it, and Eggy hijacked it, but other than that, it was simply a research base…with a gigantic freakin’ planet destroying cannon inside.
I dig the Egg Carrier. (I’d love to see how the fans that believe that the earlier games were more lighthearted would explain the freakin’ Death Egg. Which also has a gigantic freakin’ planet destroying cannon inside. :P)
Ha, the poses that are shown for the magazines are sooooo Sonic. The cover of the PS2 Magazine reminds me of the idling position for Sonic in Sonic 1. Tappin’ his foot at ya. Memories<333
Huhmana huhmana huhmana crikey does that scan look pertay
Kidding kidding, but it seriuosly looks so detailed and nice looking! I look forward to it!
@Vozo:
Efter som du bor i sverige så antar jag väl att du kan svenska. Vetdu när det nummret kommer och vilket nummer det är. Jag antar attt det är nummer 28.
