Portuguese Magazine, Maxi Consolas, revealed some new information on Sonic Unleashed today (scans posted earlier). NastCF was kind enough to do some translating for us!

Could Sonic Unleashed be the game fans have been waiting for so long? Maxi went to Japan to unveil the first hints for this comeback
Could this be it? Could it be that after the descending spiral in which he sunk during the recent years, and had his debut on the PS3 and the Xbox 360 as one of the lowest points in his career, will Sonic be able to speed back into the success of his glory days? It’s still too early to know, but things seem to be going the right way…
It was at the blue hedgehog’s own home, in Sega studios in Tokyo. that Maxi got the chance to see Sonic Unleashed in action. And all doubts and rumors have been cleared: this will in fact be a return to the so requested side scrolling perspective. But it will also be an adventure played in the more modern 3D third-person view. In the same game. And the same levels. Because action will alternate between 2d and 3d perspectives, automatically and pretty much frequently during the same level - according to Sonic Team, each section will have approximately 20 to 30 seconds. This variation could sound a tad weird, but by what we could see it seems to be implemented in a smooth and almost unnoticeable way, and in the shown examples the transition looks well done and the camera reacted flawlessly.
Be it in 2 or 3d, it’s certain that the blue hedgehog’s speed won’t disappoint; this because eye-melting speed is constant, and even though we noticed some slowdowns, understandable, seeing as this version is still in a very pre-alpha phase, it seems to be well combined with the platforming and fighting elements, even reminding us of the Mega Drive (SEGA Genesis) classics. And as in those classics, players will have a plethora of alternate pathways to reach the end of the level, many of which you get there via sequences in which the player has to press the buttons that appear on the screen. And this is always with Sonic, since we can only play as other characters in minigames - here, Tails is the only one confirmed as of yet.
Sonic visits the real world
Sonic Team really did their best in terms of Sonic Unleashed’s visuals, creating an universe that brings together both real elements and typical Sonic fantasy.
“The idea was to create a Disney style world, because it’s realistic but it’s got a lot of fantasy, combining the two elements. That way, for example, human characters have Sonic’s cartoonish style and the background, even though very realistic, is very fantasy-like”, explains Yoshihisa Hashimoto, the game’s director. And so we can see Sonic visiting several real places, such as China, London, New York or the Greek island of Mykonos, all spawning a graphic level that’s pretty satisfying as of now.
It’s true that Sonic’s still got a long way to go, but with his mind-blowing speed and the release scheduled for the end of the year, this could very well be the blue hedgehog’s return to fame. And Sonic Team states that there’s still another element, probably connected to the storyline, that should spice things up even more, so you can expect more news on the next MaxiConsolas.

I got to say, I’m loving the new look.
i hope this game’s playtime reaches at least 20hrs though…
Plus, Sonic and Elise can’t date cause the events in Sonic ‘06 never happened, so end of story.

Inter-species relationships = MASSIVE fail. Particularly between humans and anthropomorphic animals. I hate to break fans of an ElisexSonic couple, but that simply doesn’t work.
Rather, I’m fine with SonicxAmy… only if the writers create a plot where their relationship develops properly.
@RaveToTheGrave: Yeah, that would be a cool fight. Only, I don’t think Shadow has much of a reason unless Weresonic poses a threat to his whatever aims/goals he has… or if Weresonic IS his aim/goal/mission. But I wouldn’t mind seeing Shadow not appear in Unleashed either. Less emo angst would mean this game stays away from any strange subplots.

Yeah, Elise kissed Sonic right on the lips but SEGA tried to censore it with a white light. XP That’s why alot of people was upset when she kissed him, it probably wouldn’t be that big of a deal if she kissed him on the cheek or forehead.
I didn’t finish, Sonic 06… but Elise only kissed Sonic to revive him, right? Elise probably kissed Sonic on his cheek, or his forehead. Its not like she gave him a mouth kiss, right?

How did this turn into SonAmy vs SonElise vs Sonbyhimself(or whatever)? Either way…at least it’s not Rouge or something…
Well, my take on the Sonic and Elise thing is that Sonic felt sorry for her (think about it, she has to run a country on her own, deal with all the recent happenings…) and simply wanted to make her feel better. Sonic returned Elise’s hug - but she was also about to burst into tears. If you look in Sonic X he does that for ANYBODY who is about to cry or is crying. I feel that Sonic truly wants to make Elise happy since she’s a bit of an emotional wreck half the time. Also note this excerpt from a prototype game manual…”Sonic treats [Amy] almost like she’s baggage, but it is possible that he may actually feel something for her, too.” But really, it all depends on how you personally interpret things. I’m very excited to see how Amy reacts to were-Sonic (the cutscene of the century, I call it)…
