Top 10 Sonic Unleashed Questions For E3

Posted in Feature, Sonic Unleashed by David Leggett on July 14th, 2008

Despite the leaks constantly dripping out new Sonic Unleashed details, there are many aspects of the next-gen title that remain shrouded in mystery.  However, we’re in high hopes to see many of our questions answered during E3.  Here are just a few of the things we’d like to learn before the end of the week:

  1. What characters will be in Sonic Unleashed?  Who’s returning? Who’s out?
  2. Aside from Sonic, what characters will be playable, and in what manner will they be able to be played (Mini-games, unlockables, etc).
  3. We’ve heard multiplayer is out of the question (although new rumors seem to indicate otherwise), but will there be other Online features, such as Leaderboards or Downloadable Content?
  4. How does Weresonic actually play?  Video Footage is something we’re all dying to see.
  5. Will there be Chao Gardens?
  6. We’ve seen several retailers put out a release date for Sonic Unleashed.  Is SEGA set on a date, or is this all pure speculation?
  7. What levels are in Sonic Unleashed?  We’ve seen or heard of several stages such as China, New York, Europe, but know there are still a few we haven’t had confirmed.
  8. How long is a typical level? Are the areas/levels split into several stages like the classic Sonic games?
  9. Photos of a dragon-like character appeared a while back.  Is this the beast that was awakened at the center of the Earth?
  10. Will there be any sort of collectible items in Sonic Unleashed, such as collecting 50 Rings that help unlock bonus stages?

We’ll keep you updated here on Camp Sonic as we discover the answers to these questions, and hopefully many more during E3 2008!

    Are you taking any questions?

I have some Wii specific ones!

    1. Will the Wii version run in 60 frames per second by any chance? The PS360 versions were confirmed by IGN to run in 30 frames only, I’m curious if the Wii version will run in 60, just to surprise us! ;)

    2. Will the Wii version have either all of the content from the PS360 versions, or not and will have exclusive content instead?

    3. Is the Wii version ported from the PS2 version, or vise-versa?

    4. How much different and unique is the Wii version from the PS2 version? Considering that Dimps is helping with both…

    5. Will at least the Wii version have the vital Japanese voice option available? For obvious reasons *shudders*. Did Sonic ‘06 have the option in both versions? Secret Rings and Zero Gravity on the Wii had them!

    6. It was mentioned in Nintendo Power that the Wii version is running on a brushed up version of an existing engine, which one is that? The Secret Rings engine?

Thanks, I really hope you can get these answered for me! :)

@Hero of legend: I’ll forward (and adjust if necessary) questions that seem suitable to our writer out at E3. Remember though: Not all of these are being answered for sure. Maybe none will be answered…

    Good questions though ;)

Hi all ;) well.. uh you forgot the most important question bro :)
    - Will SEGA mess up again or this will get sonic back on track? I hope this will turn out good because this game is rated 9.3 at gametrailers ;) ( Sonic deserves the 10 :/ )

  12. David Leggett Says:

Hmm, plenty of questions and hopefully E3 has plenty of answers!

I have a question of my own, though: Many people have been wondering how Were-Sonic’s personality/mindset will be like. Will the Werehog be a savage monster or just our blue hero in wolves clothing?

But one thing for sure, from what the trailers shows, the werehog Sonic does NOT seem friendly…

I want to know about the PS2 version.
    Here’s a few questions I have:

    1. What’s the difference between the Wii Version and the PS2 version, besides Controls?
2.Will the WereWolf gameplay be similar in all versions of the game?
    3. How different will normal sonic’s gameplay be in the Wii/PS2 from the PS3/360 version?
    4. Will the Wii/PS2 versions have town stages?

  21. Darkspines Says:

I got a question, will mighty the armadillo or ray the flying squirrel re-appear? I’d like to see more Espio, and maybe some characters only in archie comics. also ask if it will have content that connects with chronicles: the dark brotherhood on the wii version. nice question, eh?

  22. Hannah the Echidna Says:

@Darkspines: I HIGHLY doubt that any of those characters will be in Unleashed. Then again, when I wrote my Werewolf Sonic Fanfic three years ago, I thought THAT would never happen. So… who knows?

Well in a previous post on this site we learned that you can upgrade Sonic’s speed or strengh. Hmm..if it was possible to upgrade to a speed higher than 500mph, will Sonic do a sonic boom after running a bit without using the boost gauge? Just thinking of it because this game is like Sonic rush ;)

  25. JuicyMonster Says:

Ya, this isn’t the only game I am watching at the E3, but its definitely the one I am most excited about. I have been tracking it since the info came out at the beginning of April, and it has driven me absolutely mad. The only disappointment from what we have seen so far is the footage from the Wii version. I know that the gameplay is what matters, but that Wii version is a little hard to look at.

  26. Hannah the Echidna Says:
    Reply to this comment

@JuicyMonster: You must remember, the Wii pictures are scans of a magazine, while the 360/PS3 screenshots are strait from the game. Even so, the little I’ve seen of the Wii version seems to be just about up to par with the other consoles.

Come on people stop worrying about the versions of the game because the only difference is the graphics, 2 systems are using the hedgehog engine and the wii is using the brushed up DIMPS. But the problem is the PS2 graphics… they are made to fit the PS2. ( yeah we don’t know what E3 might unviel ;) )

I thought I had read somewhere in an interview that they were keeping levels between 3-5 minutes long, more so, an interview that was published on THIS SITE! xDD

Of course, things do change, so a second confirmation would be nice

Something i’ve been thinking about though lately is bugging me. someone mentioned that each area you travel to has a “shrine” for you to cleanse the emeralds (which have been corrupted by Eggman’s machine, turning you into Were-hog Sonic). But there are only 7 emeralds….and 9 stages? I guess, maybe the last two would be after you cleansed the emeralds, and went after Eggman again, but if it’s just regular stages…the numbers just don’t seem to add up

This is probably the closest we’ll get to a full-body picture of Weresonic untill (hopefully) then. (It’s not the 1:08 thing from the newest trailer.)

A question I would ask is that is there a indicator to tell you when it is switching 2D to 3D.

Also can supersonic have Secret attacks (like in Sonic 3, Sonic could do the homing attack) and will it be played on solid ground cause I’m sick of Super Sonic just floating in space to beat the last boss (like Sonic 06, and SA2).

    Note sorry for my grammar.

I have some questions (they might have allready been asked but here we go)

1)Will you collect the emeralds ala Genesis Sonic, of will they come and go as part of the story ala Sonic Adventure?

2)If you get to play other characters will you get to play them in Sonics stages with a character selection screen like in sonic Rush, or will they have their own stages?

3)Will Jason Griffis (I think thats how you spell it)be doing Sonics voice agian, and if so, does he sound any better?

4)How will “Adventure stages” work. Will they mess up the flow with hunts for stachues and long cut scenes?

5)Is there any other “emeralds”, like super or sol emeralds,or world rings? and if so can they let you accecess different Sonic forms, like Hyper or Darkspine Sonic to use on the final boss or the normal levels?

    That’s it for now…

Coming from this year’s E3, I’d like to have some insight as to what some of these ‘minigames’ are…

    1) Sonic Adventure style.

    2) Possibly every once in a while (Hashimoto said that you “mostly” play as Sonic in the main game; as to whether or not he’s just talking about WereSonic, I don’t know).

    3) No one knows. See what you think by listening to the 1st Sonic Unleashed teaser trailer.

    4) Same style as Sonic Adventure.

    5) Highly unlikely.

    Hope that helped.

@David Leggett: Hm I wonder what the actual prizes will be since you were somewhat vague about them. Hopefully some pretty awesome stuff.

And as for Unleashed, I’m hoping that it has multiplayer of somewhat. Seeing the same kind of split screen used in Sonic 2 would be nice but hopefully it wouldn’t slow down the fast pace of the frame rate and speed. I’m also hoping for chao gardens and I’m hoping that they use wifi. It’d be awesome if the new DS RPG had one too and they could interact with one another via the wii and wifi but I think that’s setting my hopes a tad bit high =p The boss battles in the Sonic Rush series to me were the best and most epic of all. I hope they have a lot of variety in them like Rush did too. I’m also eager to see who was cut from the series all togeher. Shadow was the only other good hedgehog. I think Sonic needs a rival and SA2 was decent but the rest….Blah. Just my opinion though.

The problem with him going super is that the Chaos Emeralds are corrupted at the beginning of the game, or at least Sonic is, I’m not 100% sure on it. Either way, something is off balance with him, which would make it almost impossible to do the same things he could before.
And, It’s pretty obvious that you cannot willingly transform into Were-Sonic, as he’s a “Nights only” guy. Maybe if you had an Ocarina and the Song of time, but that isn’t the case here xD

    @WiiFP:
Sonic is extremely fast already. If Super Sonic is playable in all levels… you’d probably have little or no control over it.

In the later stages of Sonic 2… Super Sonic… meant getting squashed… or falling into a pit. Play Metroplis zone as Super Sonic… or even that airplane stage… and it is instant doom.

Since Sonic already moves so fast, reviewers are going to get VERY ANGRY if Super Sonic is too fast to control. Unless Super Sonic is the same speed as normal Sonic… I say… instant bottomless pits… or getting squashed. Especially at a game at this speed.

  81. wow Says:
    Reply to this comment

I am not saying Super Sonic in all levels is a bad idea, but this game is already so fast. Reviewers will be very harsh at any “game over” as a result of the increase in speed.

  82. Link451 Says:

You know, there’s something that’s been on my mind. I read in Gamespot’s preview (http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/sonicunleashed/news.html?sid=6191119&mode=previews) that “The ring energy is a new mechanic that is set to encourage players to haul tail and collect rings as quickly as possible. The faster you collect rings the faster it charges. Once the meter is full you can trigger a powerful speed boost.”

So does this mean you can’t use the speed boost until the meter is fully charged? Could you ask about that?

You know what would be cool, but would take up soooo much space that I wouldn’t even want it. A level creator! That would add a lot of replay value. As cool as that would be, I wouldn’t want it though. I bet it would be really hard to create a good level and as I said before it would take up a lot of space.

  86. TailstheHedgehog Says:

I hope we see some werehog gameplay.

@WiiFP: I think playing as SuperSonic at the end of the game is sort of a classic now. I dont think it would be right actually playing a level as supersonic while experiencing the game for the first time. But being able to do them again as SuperSonic sounds wicked!

I also hope that SuperSonic has some more abilities than in his last couple of games where he just rushes at enemies realy fast. The thing in Sonic Heroes was awesome where you press X and he zips around blowing rockets and stuff out of the air.

I actually read somewhere that Sonic keeps his same personality throughout his transformation, but I can’t remember where, nor can I remember if it was sourced. But that’s definitely my biggest question too; it would make a huge difference to the mood of the game.

  89. wow Says:

    There is one@WiiFP:
thing that I am concerned about. If Super Sonic is playable in every level, should he STILL be able to fall in those pits? I mean… I know this is how it has been in the past… but I think there is something really wrong with Super Sonic falling in bottomless pits.

Maybe a chaos control could teleport you back to the last checkpoint… but Super Sonic can fly.

I JUST SAW SONIC UNLEASHED ON E3!!! It was in the introduction. It was going through a list of games, Like Mario popped up, the guy from Fallout 3, But there was a 2d shot of Sonic running. Idk if that means it’ll be in there, or not, but i saw it.

Just a heads up: Nintendo will be taking the stage in less than 2 hours from now, so if you’re a Wii guy, you might wanna tune in soon (G4TV or Gamespot’s E3 Live). Again, I don’t expect to hear ANYTHING from Sega until Thursday, but it can’t hurt to see what else is being developed for the Wii.

@David Leggett: Haha, you could call me a wii guy. Hense my name . . . I saw Sonic Unleashed on the commercial for E3, could this mean anything Dave?

I come here ASAP everyday, so I don’t need an e-mail update. Don’t e-mail me, this is my mom’s.

They had better bring Fang back. He was one of the vitalist characters in the series. At least tune another character in to add to the continuity of games, like Mario, Chris, or Sally.

I better not see any flamers on those characters.

@EnzeruAnimeFan: You’ll have to unsubscribe via the bottom of those emails you’re being sent. Since you registered for subscriptions, you actually have to unsubscribe yourself ;) It’s real simple though!

    @Mynameisonic: Huh?

@WiiFP: Yup, watching it right now =) Doubt anything for Sonic Unleashed will be in it.

Werehog footage at last, plus footage of the China level and the game’s theme song, “Endless Possibility”.

    “Finally, something interesting.”

@David Leggett: If you watch that video you can see the RPG elements in it. How you completely stop moving, and completely just start killing stuff. Just amazing purely amazing. It also contained him carrying something, and putting it down, like a puzzle in the Zelda games.

Hmm… it’s not there anymore. Earlier the word “games” in number 8 was highlighted in green, and when I put my mouse over it it popped up with an ad for some Hellboy video game. Never seen anything like that before…

Can’t say I’m entirely sold on the were-hog gameplay (anyone else find it a bit anti-climactic when they finally showed footage of it)?, and the song done by the Bowling for Soup guy is truly awful (I can’t STAND his voice, so annoying and nasally <_<)

Apart from that though, the game is looking gorgeous! The China level in particular looks great. I really hope this game doesn’t disappoint, I’m getting the same sort of excitement I had when the first screens of Sonic Adventure were released. Don’t let us down Sega!!
