In case you missed the live Sonic Unleashed footage we covered earlier, Shadow has now been a confirmed character for Sonic Unleashed. During a live hands-on demonstration, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow we’re all confirmed to be in the game, although no mention of how they would be implemented was discussed.
I’m a bit worried about this choice, but I’m sure Shadow fans everywhere are rejoicing. So long as he doesn’t have guns in this installment… and doesn’t act all *gangsta* or any of that crap, I’d say there’s still a chance he’ll make a good addition to the game.
Btw, Sonic 4 is going to have Super Sonic! link...

I loathe Shadow, but not necessarily because of his ridiculous gun-toting escapades. I hate him for all that he is and all he represents XD
Shadow the Hedgehog is essentially nothing more than a second generation Sonic. An “update” to a classic, if you will. He is nothing more than a suped up version of the original hedgehog, targeted at today’s audience. And what do we like? No longer are speed, heroics and attitude enough to be “cool”. Now you need to be big, bad, and all-powerful. You’ve got to be dark, mysterious, and angtsy too… in addition to being able to do just about everything Sonic can. Sure, why not?
As a die-hard fan of Sonic Classic, and an all-out worshipper of the Blue Blur himself, I cannot help but feel betrayed. I don’t know or care so much about how this relates to Unleashed, perhaps Shadow will somehow be relevant to the plot and I’m certainly not one to say that he will somehow ruin the entire game with his presence… However, my hatred for him is almost unequivocal. I don’t need a replacement Sonic, let the next-gen fans – you know the kind… the ones who put Shadow on a pedestal and think SA2:B is the greatest game of all time – have him. My only hope is that as Sonic Team begins to turn back toward their roots that they will eventually phase him out of existence, just like other (much more loveable) characters like Big XD
I like Shadow a lot , actually. I even liked his game….I just hope for the ability to replay levels as other levels. Like how you could replay stages as Blaze or Tails or whatever in Sonic ‘06.

If you do not like Shadow, DON’T PLAY AS HIM. Lets be honest, in Sonic Heroes… almost EVERY CHARACTER has Sonic’s abilities. In Sonic Advance games, Amy’s only difference to Sonic is the inability to spinball, and that was added in Sonic Advance 3.

@talk about low budget flights: I read what David said about flame wars, and I made careful consideration to state my opinions in a non-antagonistic way. If other people like the character, then more power to them. Like I said, let his fans eat him up like chocolate cake. But I have my reasons for hating him, and I have no reason not to let them be known.
Hell, even if he is a fully playable character, I’d probably play the game as him just to get the full experience. As I said before, I dislike him purely on principle. It won’t stop me from enjoying the game, or thinking highly of it.
As for the big black ‘hog himself… well… if I ever see a gigantic talking hedgehog wearing gloves, I’ll be sure to appropriately cower in fear and retract my statements (unless a certain blue blur spins in to save me!) lol.

In Sonic X, Sonic and Shadow fall from space so many times… there must’ve been atleast 5 episodes where Super Sonic and Super Shadow lost their “Super” in space. There was even an episode in which Super Sonic lost his Super, burned on the atmosphere, and crash landed on a planet (all of that as regular Sonic.)
The characters can breathe in space, and atmosphere burning doesn’t hurt them.
There’s sorta a line you have to draw when it came to the new characters. I liked Shadow, not because of his Emo-tastical ‘tude or his “angry at the world” appearance, but because he gave Sonic a rival.
Something to go against, an equal of the matter. Yes, I’ve been playing Sonic games since the Genesis, I have the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sound test codes memorized to heart, I’ve played every single Sonic game, regardless of reviews or rants.
If you tried to deny me being a hardcore Sonic fan, I’d have Big sit on you. The point is, old-school players can like Shadow for whatever reason, just like they can hate him. The only down-fall to Shadow is that he DID try to appease to the public; the guns, the bad-*** attitude. He was the answer to modernizing Sonic games.

@Lyon the Groundhog: You make a good point. It’s good for Sonic to have a little competition. I loved Knuckles when he was introduced, even way back in the day when all three characters ran at the same speed. That’s why I personally REALLY liked Jet from Sonic Riders (not the greatest game, but it was certainly fun). His personality was a wonderful clash with Sonic’s and I thought the electricity and resulting friendship between the two was very inspiring.
As for your comment about modernizing… I’m certain you are correct… however, my personal belief is that they never needed any modernization in the first place, and I resent the fact that the market demanded otherwise. Sort of me just being a pouting purist, complaining about the fact that they added color to black and white films (that was purely an example, lol). Do I hate Shadow as a character? Not completely. I enjoy playing as him from time to time, or watching his actions in cutscenes. He is by no means a terribly designed or developed character. I hate him for what he represents. The modernization of a classic that I loved with all my heart.
That’s why I have no real complaints about his confirmed appearance in the game, but would still have preferred it otherwise.
Wow, these character fights have gotten a lot more intense, lol… I remember me and my friend fighting over who was better (Sonic or Shadow) about when Sonic Adventure 2 came out for Dreamcast, and it go something like:
him: “Sonic is so much better, he can run so much faster than shadow because he doesn’t need jet shoes to run that fast!”
me: “Shadow can run that fast, but he uses the jet shoes to save energy instead of using up all his energy to run as fast as possible.”

@dog@bird.net (Near the start of the posts…): I’ve never really liked Sonic from the start… I think my first sonic games where Sonic Triple Trouble for Game Gear (Played as Tails), and Sonic R for PC (Played as Metal Sonic mostly)… But I’m just never a fan of the main character of games usually. I don’t like Sonic, Mario, Master Chief, Falcon (Power Stone), etc…

Remember, Sonic hanging onto the wing of Eggman’s ship and going all the way out into space to the Death Egg…and Tails going out to find Sonic in the Tornado and catching him as he falls? That was all the way back in Sonic 2! Shadow and Black Doom floating by the Space Colony ARK in some cutscenes in Shadow’s game? Werehog being blown out of the airlock and falling to the broken Earth below in Sonic Unleashed cutscenes? Check the trailer when it becomes four way split screened, it’s all there.

Either way, enough about Shadow, I’ll doubt he’ll have the guns and the emo…he’s past that, remember? How about Tails and Knuckles? What role will THEY play? Will Knuckles help Sonic with purifiying the Emeralds in the shrines? Will Tails have some kind of minigame like Sky Chase?

I think I went overboard with my last comment. I like shadow don’t get me wrong but hes not much of a rival for sonic anymore which is sad. They used to be like yin and yang black and white. hell shadow was like ash’s gary to sonic. Shadow had mor fighting experience then sonic. He was a way cool rival till he got one up with a gun. Adding guns might have been a way to modernize but it was in all honesty dumb. lets just hope weresonic won’t turn out to be a big disaster like shadow+gun.
I’m glad Shadow’s in! And for the abilities and similarities, have you ever seen Sonic using Chaos Spear for example? It’s stupid to say Shadow’s a dark clone of Sonic. They even have different styles in their quills!

Like in SA2, Shadow sided with the doctor because they both where going towards somewhat of the same goal. And even there, he was only going along with him as long as it fulfilled his own terms…

They turned back time and stopped Shadow from ever going on that mission, Sonic from saving Elise, None of it.

Tails will probably bring some gizmo or gadget later on into the game to help Sonic with the Were-hog situation. And as for Knuckles, like someone mentioned, he can probably play a big role in helping restore the Emeralds.

Its really just Sonic that “knows” what Robotnik is up to. Egg Carrier is so high up in the sky, it’s mostly Sonic’s friends that knows about Robotnik’s deeds.

I am looking forward to plaing with around 4 to five characters. Sonic is my favorite though, his style is so cool. =) I have no problemo with Shadow is he fights alongside Sonic. They make a pretty good team, second to Sonic and Tails.

I’m wrong? Now your post is beginning to offend me. Do you know how much Sega CD sold? Sonic CD is a rare game owned by so few people. Sega “officially” declares the Sonic classics to be Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Knuckles.
I don’t suppose you’ll claim Chaotix is a classic as well, right? So few people actually owned Sega CD or 32x. Dreamcast is a console that actually had a decent amount of sales. And I doubt anyone would have “trouble” recognizing Amy. It’s a HEDGEHOG that is PINK.
If you still want to claim that I am wrong, why don’t you poll random gamers. Unless you are speaking SPECIFICALLY to hardcore Sega fans, the chances of finding someone with a Sega CD is rare. For the average gamer, Sonic Adventure is their first experience with Amy… Sonic Heroes is their first experience with Chaotix.

The most well-known games are Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Knuckles. Those are considered classics.
Oh… and Sonic Drift. Really, a GAME GEAR game you are mentioning? I am sure there is a hidden “turtle” character you’d consider “classic” and more known than Shadow. Sonic Drift wasn’t even sold in most stores at the time. Perhaps there is a “Sonic Schoolhouse” character I should care about… because I’m sure they are “first” and more known than Shadow.

I find it odd that you’d want to exclude Sonic/Sega fans from that little “poll challenge” of yours though. Its possible (though uncommon) to find people in the world who don’t even know who Sonic is, but that’s certainly not the point anyone’s trying to make. Of course a non-Soniic fan would be less likely to know of Sonic CD or who Amy is. Because being a non Sonic fan: they don’t CARE! We, being here AS Sonic fans: DO.

Whoa, got a little creative, there… My emotions got a little 2 involved, i drew the whole thing…Did i mention im an artist?
To be honest, is there anything wrong with any of the characters that good character development and appropriate usage wouldn’t fix? If Shadow is working for G.U.N, then it would make sense that they would be involved. Even if they’re not (this story is not connected to the other games, remember?), this game runs on a “clean slate” with character development. Maybe you’ll like this incarnation of Shadow a little bit more now that he’s not “hog”-ing the spotlight. I think more people liked Shadow in SA2 than people who didn’t, and the “angst” seems to be from Team Dark having the most important storyline in Heroes, and then Shadow getting his OWN game…instead of a new Sonic. Then, when we get a new Sonic game…he’s running around with a human girl while Shadow is arguably the least confused of the three hedgehogs(which sounds odd to say”.
Point is, if Shadow is a part of the storyline like any other character than he should be seen as a “side character”. That means, he’s either an enemy or an ally. If he’s an ally, is that so bad? The story is about Sonic…it’s always possible Shadow could get involved because of his own experiance with feeling out of control. Shadow seems all angsty and lonerish, but as of ShtH and Sonic ‘06…he’s portrayed as an ally of Sonic’s. So yeah, being a popular character…and a controversial one…they probably figure him a minor role is best for everyone.
This is all speculation, though. Maybe he’s ONLY in the game in minigames like in Secret Rings. He has NOT been confirmed as playable or even as part of the storyline. Give peace a chance! Oh sorry, wrong slogan. Give it time!

I think we need to, as Sonic fans, look beyond our own tastes and realize that this is a product for a wide audience. Sega has taken a risky step in the sense that Secret Rings was criticized for having ONLY Sonic by many, while other games are criticized for not being about Sonic. Obviously, they’re looking for a compromise. Other characters have no DEFINED roles, other than reports(rumors?) that Tails might have a minigame. Every established report has emphatically said it’s 99% Sonic/Werehog. Let’s be reasonable here. I hated Big’s adventure in SA and I’m hesitant playing as him in Heroes(even if he’s hilarious), but Big was hilarious as a background element and hidden factor in SA2 and Secret Rings.
What I’m saying is…put in the appropriate role, NO character is bad. Only the characterization. And the usage of the character.

I agree with Crazee. I believe that just about every character has their place (even the ones I hate), and the real problem is trying to cram all of them into every single game – a problem compounded by trying to make them all playable as well.
It has been a tradition for the core Sonic games to introduce a new character with each installment, and I think the real solution probably lies not in aboloshing this tradition, but by putting each character in their appropriate place. Even if that place is only within the context of a single game.
Some characters work well as background characters, support characters, storyline characters, and some work better as playable characters. Some characters, however loveable, probably deserve to be left behind and in their proper place (Big, for example. A wonderful character with no real place outside of SA)
Despite my distaste for characters like Shadow, I feel he was well-placed as both a playable and storyline character in SA2. Honestly, I would have preferred that his death be the conclusive end of it, but as a popular character it was inevitable that he lived on. The events of Shadow the Hedgehog may or may not have been an example of poor placement and abuse of that popularity, but I believe that he fufilled his role quite nicely in Sonic 06.
All of this is merely to reiterate what Crazee has said. Whether we like certain characters or not (Hell, I don’t even like Amy, but I recognize her importance and her rightful place in the franchise), they all have a special place within the Sonic Universe that ought to be respected. I think Sonic Team has the right idea with this one, and it seems to me that every character will be fulfilling their individual roles rather nicely.
i like to see all those characters in the game, but id rather playing as knuckles instead of weresonic, i mean wtf? WERESONIC? the rest of the game seems cool, and shadow could be playable in the first episode alongside sonic, but NO werehogs plz

Admittedly, I don’t think that it was a good idea to make Big playable, (even though he IS my favorite character), but having him in cameo roles fits it much better. Most every character has their place in the franchise, if they can find a way to make it work. They appear to be getting the idea…

So Shadow is in the game? Congratulations to who wanted him in. Me, I’d prefer if the only extra characters were Tails and Knuckles (and Amy, who has already been confirmed). I’m glad he’s in Sonic Chronicles, since it’s an RPG, and since the more characters we have the more fun it is. But I’ve marked this game (Unleashed) as special.
Shadow has appeared in all 3D canon games. Why doesn’t SEGA give him a rest? I’ll just keep waiting. There’s always a next game.

Shadow’s segment in this stroyline is irrelavant to his reputation. On his first debut there were a lot of fans for him, even more then the ammount there were for sonic on his very first debut. So the fans will be extremely happy to have Shadow back on the storyline since SA2 and SA2 Battle. BUT… Has everyone forgotten about the voice actor? Drop the warfare of the hedgehogs.. {For now} And go and try to make sega change the voice actor back. Shadow AND Sonic both have the same voice actor that emphasizes a TON! I say we have some rants about Jason Anthony Griffith {Very bad voice actor for Sonic and Shadow} before having World Wide Wars on the fastest hedhehogs on the planet. Now, like I said, Shadow’s part to the storyline will be irrelavant to his reputation. The “adding guns to Shadow” part was a pretty bad idea. But sooner or later that will be a thing of the past. Then Shadow will be right back up on his feet and have even more fans on his side. I’m the biggest Shadow the Hedgehog fan you guys will prolly ever meet. Trust me.
Do something about the voice actor first people! Ever since Shadow got Jason to be his voice actor it’s been.. Stranger. Less fans.. Same goes for Sonic but you know, I prefer to help Shadow more. Hey, RockerDuDe. I have the game. I played the game. And I owned the game! Got all A rank and everything. I know how it goes. I have the greenhill stage, secondary costumes for characters, etc. I’ve even beat the final boss. That biohazard thing, without losing damage atleast 3 times. That thing doesn’t kill Shadow, Shadow and Sonic defeated it. So save your tears cus if Sonic can survive a fall from space {Sonic X} then OF COURSE Shadow can. So yeah. Shadow is in fact the ultimate lifeform.
To the rest of you. I’m here to defend shadow from you losers wether you like it or not. The only downside to most of his characteristics is Jason. By that I mean voice. But hey, it’s only a minor problem. I’m sure it will be solved soon. Atleast I hope.

I hate the fact that most people want Shadow to be torn up by that werehog if he does show up in the stroyline. If Shadow does take place in the storyline, it better be good. I don’t have suggestions for it, but I know Shadow will pull through, and if faught, hopefully Shadow will beat werehog Sonic. Shadow the Hedgehog is my favorite character the whole Sonic Series. I am his biggest fan no doubt. I couldn’t care less about Sonic, Silver, or any other hedgehogs. Shadow is the best there is!

You know how for the Wii and PS2, a different company made the game? Perhaps they excluded Shadow and Knuckles on purpose. But SEGA confirmed them, so they will definitely appear on the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. I have Sonic Unleashed for Wii, and I was disappointed that Shadow was not in it.
What Shadow’s not in Sonic Unleashed what a rip off but I’m still getting the game Shadow or no Shadow.

yes, i completed the game for the Wii and PS2 (they are the same version) and i think Knuckles and Shadow will appear ONLY in the Xbox360 and PS3 version (they are a Director’s Cut versions from the Wii/PS2 versions, but with more levels)
