IGN Talks with SEGA

IGN had the opportunity to sit down with someone from SEGA this morning at E3, where they had the pleasure to discuss 3 games being developed, including one you may have heard of, Sonic Unleashed.

Here’s a quick run down of what was discussed (Sonic Unleashed related) during the interview:

  • Sonic the Werehog is not as fast as Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • There are no space or pinball levels in Sonic Unleashed.
  • The whole story is about the earth, so they’re sticking to the whole feel of our world.
  • New moves… Sonic drift… blah, blah blah – you know, the second point here is the only thing we really didn’t already know, so I’m just going to cut things off now.

I have a feeling that we were supposed to learn more during the interview, but things got changed last minute, as IGN’s own schedule is wrong, and they definitely were not speaking with Sean Ratcliffe as they indicate on their live wire

UPDATE: They were speaking with Tali Fischer , a PR manager from Sega of America (I think).  They just updated the name… so, guess they had a problem finding Sean.

Thanks to Chaoscontrol for the heads up!

    I feel kinda sorry for the Sonic fans of IGN that don’t know about Sonic camp or these other sites. IGN hasn’t had no REAL info since the “High Europe” trailer debut

    keep on doing what your doing, Camp Sonic. I, myself, wouldn’t have known more about Unleashed otherwise

    @James: It’s really nothing James. They talk about unleashed probably for a full minute, but aside from the ‘no pinball or space stages’ statement, all else has been talked about already.

    C’mon SEGA! Why are you teasing us with an opening CGI in space, and then not have any levels where you actually get to play in space?

    Sigh… at least it makes you wonder what the last two levels are.

  29. Ristar Says:

    Maybe since we won’t be getting a space level. Maybe the “Massive Black” level will be the final stage. I remember hearing Massive Black being described as a futuristic looking city.

    Yeah, I wanted a space level too. But that’s fine. And the pinball stage is obvious , how do pinball mechanics fit in a ‘real world’ like they’re aiming for? The only way to even tie in would be to have a casino level with regular level mechanics. That’s why I wanted a Vegas level.

    That said… I guess we’re looking at Austrailian Outback, Antartic…and Incan/mayan/etc temples as stages. Just a guess, but all three would tie in as real world locations, geographically diverse and fit Sonic themes (like ancient/Ice/Temple themes).

    Just a thought. And forgive the sloppy grammar there, I appreciate my offtime from writing. lol

    The werehog parts of this game…

    Once the game is completed, there should be a mode in which you play exclusively the Sonic the Hedgehog levels… or exclusively the Sonic the Werehog levels.

    Obviously, the werehog bits are there to keep this from being a very short game… once the game is beaten… there should be “classic mode…” in which you can choose to play through the story again… as either Sonic only… or Werehog only.

    To bad about no space levels. I enjoyed the thought of playing a big boss in outer space. Perhaps the last boss battle will be at the centre of the earth. Couldnt really see a pinball level in the game anyway unless sonic went to vegas. And that would just be silly I think.

    Still think a level in Australia is needed!

    P.S
    I cant get over that new trailer. Its so awesome! I must have watched it 10 times already! My speakers r gonna break soon!

  46. ChaoticFox Says:

    Casino levels are always fun, and a wonderful staple for the franchise, but I just don’t see how they’d really fit in the style this game is going for, so perhaps it’s best that they were left out.

    As for the space thing, I think that’s a wonderful exclusion. The game starts in space, so let’s just say we already got that covered ;)

    @EnzeruAnimeFan: I think he will be. Because he was assigned to games straight from Sonic X. And he has been the voice recently, and personally, i thought he was a great Sonic the Hedgehog voice. But Sonic is a unique video game character. Because he actually TALKS. So SEGA needs to be careful on who they place here. But i think Jason would be a great voice for him. I wonder how he’ll talk in Werehog form in the cutscenes . . .

    Kotaku and 1-UP have given their opinion about Sonic Unleashed…surprise, surprise, they don’t like the Werehog.

    Okay, that’s a bit of a stretch, more like Kotaku, who got to play through it, thought the game was 50% marshmellows, 50% **** (but still, 50% ****) and 1UP, who didn’t get the playthrough, was skeptical about the Werehog experience, but wasn’t going to count it out.

    Kotaku
    1UP

    Knowing that Kotaku has an obvious bias towards the franchise, and I suppose that 1UP’s opinions of the recent installments probably aren’t solid, I’m not expecting them to change their stance, even when they get a chance to play the whole game. o__o;;

    It makes me wonder if the ability to set back the clock will be available in EVERY level. Have they said anything about that, David?

    @dragonite: They made that site at a time where there was nearly no information about the game. So, I suppose it’d be lamer when more information came out. With Sonic Unleashed as the name, they have to focus more on the Werehog, with Sonic World Adventure as the name, they have to focus on THE WORLD.

    And yes, it does.

    Inaudible, remember… after Sonic Adventure 2… many people seem to assume that extra characters/features mean little Sonic. The Dark story had like… 4 speed levels… and the rest dominated by treasure hunting, and shooting.

    Sonic Unleashed, has more than 6.. or 4… directly after the Werehog… you’ll be back as Sonic… it’s not like… werehog… werehog… werehog… then Sonic. Its… Werehog… Sonic… Werehog… Sonic… Werehog… Sonic.

    And by the way… they didn’t actually TELL SEGA they hated it, right? That’s be mean.

    I don’t think modern journalists will ever have a positive reaction to Sonic games unless it’s in 2D. They’ve even retroactively decided that SA and SA2 are as “bad” as the newer ones, not taking into account they came out so long ago and were top-grade for their time.

    @Crazee:

    Crazee, most of the complaints about Sonic Adventure 2 concern that less than 1/3 of the game is Sonic… there are like 30 levels, and 10 of those are Sonic/Shadow. A big concern is the DARK story… and that is completely dominated by Rouge and Robotnik levels.

    Sonic Unleashed… the Werehog already has negative reception… I understand that without these “extras,” Sonic would be very short… I mean cut the treasurehunting/shooting from Sonic Adventure 2… it’s like a 45 minute game, right?

  79. yes Says:

    I mean, since Sonic just runs through the levels, it may be difficult to make that game long.

    So Sega adds… extras.

    The thing is, everyone has their own idea of a perfect sonic game. I don’t see why this game is getting a lot of negative feedback (along with a lot of good feedback too) when this game is a monumental improvement for the franchise (may be mispelled)

    I’m so excited with this game, I know I’ll be more than happy with it.

    @G&E:

    It’s pretty obvious, really. According to most critics, the last few console games for Sonic haven’t been very good at all. It makes sense for them to still be critical, especially because of the Werehog, which very well could turn out to be pretty mediocre if not designed well.

    And besides, regardless of what they have to say about the game, I know I’m going to end up loving it, much the same as I did the Sonic game that actually drew me in to the series years ago, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

    I wasn’t too surprised when they confirmed that there would be no space level, because what would determine if it were night or day time? It would probably always be considered night time and that’s probably why sonic turned into the werehog right when Eggman used his macine on sonic and the emeralds.

  85. Final Rush Says:

    @G&E:

    It could’ve taken place in the 8th or 9th levels, after Sonic fixed his Werehog problem (assuming that’s what happens).
