IGN Talks with SEGA

IGN had the opportunity to sit down with someone from SEGA this morning at E3, where they had the pleasure to discuss 3 games being developed, including one you may have heard of, Sonic Unleashed.

Here’s a quick run down of what was discussed (Sonic Unleashed related) during the interview:

  • Sonic the Werehog is not as fast as Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • There are no space or pinball levels in Sonic Unleashed.
  • The whole story is about the earth, so they’re sticking to the whole feel of our world.
  • New moves… Sonic drift… blah, blah blah – you know, the second point here is the only thing we really didn’t already know, so I’m just going to cut things off now.

I have a feeling that we were supposed to learn more during the interview, but things got changed last minute, as IGN’s own schedule is wrong, and they definitely were not speaking with Sean Ratcliffe as they indicate on their live wire

UPDATE: They were speaking with Tali Fischer , a PR manager from Sega of America (I think).  They just updated the name… so, guess they had a problem finding Sean.

Thanks to Chaoscontrol for the heads up!

    FIRST TO COMMENT FINALLY

I don’t have a problem with no pinball stage.

  3. Sonicman July 17, 2008

    *sigh*
    nevermind

  4. talk about low budget flights July 17, 2008

    Tokyo Game Show is next.

  5. Xeternalstar July 17, 2008

    whens the demo release guys???

  6. Hannah the Echidna July 17, 2008

Though I enjoyed the Nights into Dreams pinball game in Sonic Adventure, I certainly won’t miss it, either.

  7. shadlol July 17, 2008

no… tokyo game show is a event on tokyo no a level

  8. Link451 July 17, 2008

Could someone post the link to this? The one up there (the live wire hyperlink) seems to be different games.

  9. sonicfan July 17, 2008

Can you post the video to the interview?

  10. I feel kinda sorry for the Sonic fans of IGN that don’t know about Sonic camp or these other sites. IGN hasn’t had no REAL info since the “High Europe” trailer debut

keep on doing what your doing, Camp Sonic. I, myself, wouldn’t have known more about Unleashed otherwise

  11. wiinterfang July 17, 2008

No space stage? well at least people then people won’t be comparing Sonic to mario galaxy.

  12. Hey, will they be posting this on their website, like Gamepsot did with their coverage of the game?

  13. @James: It’s really nothing James. They talk about unleashed probably for a full minute, but aside from the ‘no pinball or space stages’ statement, all else has been talked about already.

  14. doc a doc July 17, 2008

That does make sense. If the monster thing is the last boss then it will probably be under ground.

  15. @David Leggett: Crud. Also, you have a point.

  16. I would think that the Serpent Creature may be fought in the earth but then Sapce, as its a boss, NOT a lvl kinda, this would make sense.

  17. i think this site has the best information of sonic unleashed

  18. Opps, i mispelled Space, sorry.

  19. why was the interview short

  20. Chaoscontrol July 17, 2008

@Andrew: because they messed up the schedule and couldn’t get Sean Ratcliff

  21. @Chaoscontrol: Not necessarily, that’s just my guess. Maybe it was just going to be short period.

  22. By the way, you can go watch it now. Go to the live wire archive, click thursday, and look for Sega.

  23. @David Leggett: So when is your interview with SEGA going to be?

  24. Chaoscontrol July 17, 2008

    @David Leggett: cool thanks

  25. Well, that was disappointing, to say the least.

C’mon SEGA! Why are you teasing us with an opening CGI in space, and then not have any levels where you actually get to play in space?

Sigh… at least it makes you wonder what the last two levels are.

  26. Maybe since we won’t be getting a space level. Maybe the “Massive Black” level will be the final stage. I remember hearing Massive Black being described as a futuristic looking city.

  27. @David Leggett:

Hey, do you have any idea when you’ll be posting the news from the SEGA interview/press conference that you’ve been telling us about since pre-E3?

  28. Jujuchan July 17, 2008

I was wondering about that too. the press confrence was supposed to be today, right?

  29. Darkspines July 17, 2008

@David Leggett: Screens of chronicles’ chao garden are here!: http://ds.ign.com/articles/891/891891p2.html

  34. By the way, its a Video interview, no text! :-/

  35. Xeternalstar July 18, 2008

cmon whens the demo will it be for wii?(the demo i mean)

  36. Darkspines July 18, 2008

    i kno! i neeeeeeeed demo!

  37. @Xeternalstar: I doubt it because they dont hold demos on WiiShop channel, unless they sell it in a store, though.

  38. Yeah, I wanted a space level too. But that’s fine. And the pinball stage is obvious , how do pinball mechanics fit in a ‘real world’ like they’re aiming for? The only way to even tie in would be to have a casino level with regular level mechanics. That’s why I wanted a Vegas level.

That said… I guess we’re looking at Austrailian Outback, Antartic…and Incan/mayan/etc temples as stages. Just a guess, but all three would tie in as real world locations, geographically diverse and fit Sonic themes (like ancient/Ice/Temple themes).

Just a thought. And forgive the sloppy grammar there, I appreciate my offtime from writing. lol

  39. dog@bird.net July 18, 2008

The werehog parts of this game…

Once the game is completed, there should be a mode in which you play exclusively the Sonic the Hedgehog levels… or exclusively the Sonic the Werehog levels.

Obviously, the werehog bits are there to keep this from being a very short game… once the game is beaten… there should be “classic mode…” in which you can choose to play through the story again… as either Sonic only… or Werehog only.

  40. TailstheHedgehog July 18, 2008

To bad about no space levels. I enjoyed the thought of playing a big boss in outer space. Perhaps the last boss battle will be at the centre of the earth. Couldnt really see a pinball level in the game anyway unless sonic went to vegas. And that would just be silly I think.

Still think a level in Australia is needed!

    P.S
I cant get over that new trailer. Its so awesome! I must have watched it 10 times already! My speakers r gonna break soon!

  41. Xeternalstar July 18, 2008

there was a demo for sonic 06 a few months before it came out… so they might have a demo on wii 2 months afore SU… what er ur thoughts?

  42. MarioSonic July 18, 2008

I always want some casino or pinball levels back to the game, but never mind. The hoping is over.

  43. Casino levels are always fun, and a wonderful staple for the franchise, but I just don’t see how they’d really fit in the style this game is going for, so perhaps it’s best that they were left out.

As for the space thing, I think that’s a wonderful exclusion. The game starts in space, so let’s just say we already got that covered ;)

  44. Xeternalstar July 18, 2008

    demo info plz

  45. An epic space level would have been good.

  46. Just a heads up — our writeup will be online tomorrow. Just finished talking with our writer who JUST got back from E3. We’re both dead-tired, and in need of some sleep.

Sorry for the delay folks. With how much we all found out at E3 already though, I wouldn’t think that anyone’s too desperate for any more immediate impressions :P

  47. TailstheHedgehog July 18, 2008

    Thanks David!
You’ve been great I wouldnt know half of what I already know without yor help:):):)
