E3 was really busy for those of us interested in Sonic Unleashed, which by a count of hands, I see is nearly everyone here. With all the action going on in our own community, you may have missed some interesting posts from around the greater Sonic Community. Here’s some of the links we found to be interesting over the past week!
- Summer of Sonic: Play Sonic Chronicles before it’s released! - It’s times like these that I really wish I could afford overseas airfare. Participate over at Summer of Sonic, and you could play Sonic Chronicles nearly 2 months before it’s release!
- What AAUK’s been up to - Speaking of Summer of Sonic, check out what AAUK has been up to recently!
- Sonic Chronicles Website Updated - And in regards to Sonic Chronicles, you may have not noticed that the official site has been updated. Find all 60 rings, and you’ll unlock 2 awesome wallpapers (a few of them are a bit tricky)
- Lots of new Sonic Chronicles Screenshots over at TSSZ - And we mean LOTS.
- Plus a Recap of the Playtest demonstrated at E3 - A pretty good read if you’re considering purchasing it later on.
- Where in the World is Jun Senoue - According to TSS, he may already be working on things for the next Sonic game!
- 2007 Sonic Movie Pitch Was in Fact Real - The Sonic Stadium has details. Sounds like an end to all the Sonic Move drama.
- Samba De Amigo to include Classic Sega Characters - Such as… you guessed it - Sonic.
- Riptens’ Sonic Unleashed Impressions - “I believe that Sonic Unleashed has the potential to be one of the best Sonic games in a very long time, stretchy Werehog arms and all. A few months ago Nintendo took Mario into outer space, and frankly I see this as SEGA’s attempt to experiment with the Sonic brand in a similar way.” - It’s a great read folks!
- Gamespot’s Sonic Unleashed Impressions - “When night falls, you’ll encounter a pretty different spin on the classic gameplay, but from what we were able to see in a demonstration today, fans of Sonic Adventure should be able to look forward to another capable platformer.“
- 1UP Sonic Unleashed Impressions - “Sonic Unleashed certainly looks to draw in several distinct gameplay elements, but unless the daytime segments dominate the experience, we may be looking at yet another uneven 3D Sonic experience.“.
- Kotaku’s Sonic Unleashed Impressions - “When we said we hated the stupid tacked on 3D gimmicky elements of the 3D Sonic games, we didn’t mean we hated them only 50% of the time. 50% of crap and marshmallows is still 50% crap.“.
- Kombo’s Sonic Unleashed Impressions - “The question that remains is this: Will Sonic Team put together a polished game that reinvigorates the brand, or will they yet again let Sega shove an unfinished product out the door to make that November release date?“.
- SEGA E3 Mass Breakdown - A great rundown of what SEGA had to show off this year at E3.
- Triple E3 Roundup - Sonic City Blognik picks up where the SEGA Europe blog leaves off with a roundup of what Sega had to show at E3.

@DarkChaos: Look at the issue number >__> not the sword…*Sighs* Is that plainly obvious?
If I sound like a stupid noob, then I must be on crack.
check this out http://www.nintendoeverything.com/?p=2084
could it be real?
@ShadoHejjihoggu: It could be proof since sometimes they deliberately style it differently and the blue coloring does imply Sonic, but honestly, it looks like a sword in a stone or something like that. If it was Sonic or anyone wielding a sword, wouldn’t it be a silhouette of a person holding a sword? It could be even a standard person silhouette holding a sword in blue background that could imply Sonic, but not this. I think it would actually be rather interesting to see how a game with Sonic wielding a sword would play out, but that picture doesn’t back up the cover for this supposed game very well. We’ll just have to wait until the magazine actually comes out and then someone will clear this up.
@Final Rush: Oh…Uh, I do have proof. Look at that issue. The September issue. What number does it say below the white box that shows the address?
232. XP Dude, what did I tell you? What does it say for the next preview on the august issue? 232 for the next issue after 231. Sheesh, LOOK harder.
@Final Rush: Dude, I’ve been in Nintendo Power back since 1998. If the next preview pretty much HINTS the cover…Thats what it’s going to be on the next month issue. Please, forget how the sword looks.
Look at the coloring style! Does anyone color besides that? Or did people forget that’s how Sonicteam is known for to have their concepts like.
But you didn’t read that I did corrected myself it was the august issue. >__>; Read more carefully then jumping there.
@ShadoHejjihoggu:
Um, I wouldn’t really call that “proof”. The design of the sword looks completely different from the one shown on the supposed September issue cover scan.
And it’s the August issue, not May.
Yeah, I get what you’re saying. But these are all mainline games, not sports titles or compilations. These are “big” titles. It seems odd to promote a Wii-exclusive Sonic game two months from the release date of your next big Sonic title. If information leaked…fair enough, it happens. But this is a deliberate marketing attempt that had to have been planned for at LEAST a month or two before the release of the magazine. Sonic Unleashed is a Wii title…why draw attention away from it? That’s what I mean by bad business sense. They would wait until Unleashed comes out and hopefully gain positive attention if the game is as good as they believe it is. At this point, you gain NOTHING except ridicule. Sega can be stupid…but they are not that stupid, IMO. At least, I would hope not.
To be honest, I wouldn’t mind it being true. It doesn’t offend me. They could release some Sonic strategy game…I’d have no interest, but I’d just say no with my pocketbook. As long as the main series are good, then spinoffs and side series can appeal to another audience. Square does this quite often, and the fans are just glad enough to see their favorite characters that they accept it. Why? The games are good. S&TSR deserves a sequal, and if this was that…it’s Sonic in a fantasy setting. I think it’d be fun.
But…I don’t believe it. Not at all. Let it be known, I’ve only read your post here since I clicked the “recent comments”. So if anyone brought up good points, I’ll feel stupid. But Sega would be stupider…marketing wise.
@ShadoHejjihoggu: Er, sorry folks I meant August issue. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Hey, guys. If you want some proof that this isn’t fake…
Does anyone have the May issue for Nintendo Power? I do…Now, at the final page; there’s a sword stuck into a blue object. That object is somehow colored sonic adventure like. Irony huh?
Here’s what it says about the next issue…..
“September 2008 Vol. 232
Next Month
We’ll kick off the next 20 years of Nintendo Power with more big reveals, including a top secret cover story fit for a king. It’s got a lot of heart. Just kidding. It’s Mother 3. Just kidding. Please look forward to it.”
Am I lying? Ha, don’t think so. Here’s proof!

Sorry for the camera flash.
@sn8k: “Plus the spine corners look too used to be a preview for the next issue, in other words the magazine looks like it has been on a magazine stand at a store too long. I realize that Nintendo Power prints their stuff in advance but if it’s a “leak” or whatever of an issue that has yet to come out I doubt it would have that wear and tear.”
This.
David, David, quick, start a Sonic and the Dark Knight (or whatever the hell it’s called, check the Nintendo Power cover) website!!!!
@Crazee:
There was a rumour but it was downplayed, everyone thought (and many think still is) that the game was Kingdom Hearts 3 that they were teasing. You are right though, there should’ve been some sort of buzz before the actual visuals were leaked.
And I don’t understand what you mean about business sense. Sonic, much like Mario, has games developed by different studios. For instance, the next “main” Mario game is being developed by one studio, will Mario Sluggers by another. Sonic Chronicles is being developed by Bioware, and Sonic Unleashed by Sonic Team and DIMPS (I wikied it).
I also, like you, refuse to believe (now) that this is true until I see more than one screen. One mock up is easy to do now that I think of it, in comparison to a press release. If someone was to make a mockup, they wouldn’t be doing a Sonic game, no offence people. They’d be focusing on making a cover for the next Halo, GTAV, or some other blockbuster.
@yamiseto:
Thats the idea, your supposed to take them with a grain of salt. Previews are well, previews. Theyre previewing a game in Alpha (or pre-alpha was it?) and they give their impressions, not to be taken as reviews. Kotaku and such should be taken with a mountain of salt, opinionated blogs like that give the no BS opinion, which I respect and think should be there, to even out monotomy in game reviews.
@DarkChaos:
Most will give it a chance, but Sega has lost respect with the fans. There was a time where Sega published some of the greatest games recieved by gamers: SA1&2, Gunstar Heroes, Virtua Fighter, Rez etc. But especially with the Sonic Series, things have noticably gone downhill. I have never heard of a Sonic Fan that has enjoyed 2006 more than Sonic Heroes, and that more than SA2. They try too much, try to twist their formula, but we still gave them faith. Unleashed is the revolution some of us were looking for, thinking Sega digested their **** ideas. And then the Werehog hit. I personally gave the werehog a chance after seeing gameplay footage, but meh.
Whoa, uber long post.
lol, I didn’t read all the comments but on “The Black Knight” I think some of you guys are on to something, the address bar from the Sonic Stadium posting does not look right. As for the Fox thing in the upper right hand corner I think they had it on this/last months issue. Plus the spine corners look too used to be a preview for the next issue, in other words the magazine looks like it has been on a magazine stand at a store too long. I realize that Nintendo Power prints their stuff in advance but if it’s a “leak” or whatever of an issue that has yet to come out I doubt it would have that wear and tear.
I meant to say “It” could be really cool, not “I”
I’ve been a sonic fan ever since the begining, I love the classics and I loved the Sonic adventure series, and enjoyed the games that follow those and I think that cover of the Nintendo Power looks awesome! I am tiny bit skeptical though, but all I’ve seen is the cover, so I won’t judge yet. I could be really cool, It may not even be real but it does look legit.
Sonic with a sword does sound better than Shadow with a gun, but then again, a lot of things do.
PS. Sonic Unleashed looks like it will join the group of favorite Sonic games. Others are Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle!
I love all the sonic games and the black knight I want to belive but I think it might be fake alough I thought that about mario and sonic at the olympics…
@WiiFP:
Well, BioWare does have a pedigree track record, so fans shouldn’t be too worried about Chronicles.
@yamiseto:
Unfortunately for us, they ARE among the ones who decide whether or not Unleashed is going to be the best 3D Sonic game ever.
@DarkChaos:
I get what you’re trying to say, but the problem is SEGA HAS failed nearly every single time they’ve strayed from the formula. Who knows? Maybe the Werehog will be different. Maybe SatBK will also be different if it turns out to be real. We really don’t know. But one thing’s for sure: fans and critics alike have every right to be skeptical.
Here’s to hoping SEGA’s making a change in the right direction!
@DarkChaos: I agree. People need to calm down about this new possible installment. It could be a fun and enjoyable game. Look at Sonic Chronicles people, It’s an RPG turn-base game, very different from the other sonic games, and people are getting pretty into that.
Everyone needs to calm down on this possible Sonic and the Black Knight thing. Be it fake or real, what does it matter? I personally say give it a chance if it is real and if it turns out fake, at least you didn’t get worked up over nothing. I personally say trying knew things is fine. I have most of the Sonic games and each game had an enjoyable factor to it. The whole thing of saying it’s horrible because it is different from the original is pretty sad in my opinion. I don’t mean to offend people, but these kinds of complaints are what make me very irritated at people. To keep a franchise alive you need to spread from the original theme a bit. Give any game a chance, give the werehog Sonic a chance and any other thing a chance. A change from the classic Sonics doesn’t mean failure.
