GamesMaster Gives Sonic Unleashed “Most Wanted” Title
We had a few people submit this yesterday (both in comments and email), but it looks like ENVY16 from SSMB was the first to get their hands on the latest issue of GamesMaster. Nothing new jumps out at us, but something worth noting is that Sonic Unleashed definitely impressed the folks at GM.
How Much?
Well, enough for them to give it a rating of 5 on the Most Wanted Scale. Their only complaints about the game was the lack of multiplayer and online leaderboards (which I have a feeling may be more of an assumption the way they stated it). At any rate, if you’d like to read their impressions catch the scans below!

@no: The Doctor was actually talking about both the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald, but the localisation team decided to make it something slightly more familiar. And Knuckles?
Knuckles saw that they already had them and was all like, “You have my emeralds! That human was right! Give them back!” and then punched Sonic in the face, knocking them out of his grasp. Knuckles then ran off with them to put them back and continue guarding them while Sonic and Tails, thinking he was a thief, went after him.
The rest of the game is then a blur of traps and tricks as Knuckles keeps stopping Sonic and Tails from having a chance to explain while Eggman airlifts the Master Emerald out of there. Sonic and Knuckles reach an agreement and Sonic goes after Eggman while Knuckles has the Eggrobo to contend with.
Hope that explains the entire game. XP
@Umiyuri:
Wow, that makes complete sense.
@Umiyuri:
That makes complete sense. But I probably shouldn’t make this confusing.
@no: Thanks. I try. Sonic games aren’t easy to make sense out of, especially the ones without cutscenes, but when you finally get it it feels like you’ve accomplished something.
Of course, -then- you realise that you haven’t really and that you’re still frustrated over the first level of the game. I keep being caught by that one tree…
@Umiyuri:
Which Sonic game are you talking about, with the tree?
@no: Sonic 3. In the very first level, you run behind this tree and it grabs you with a bungee cord made out of circles. It’s very traumatic. I think Sonic clawed at the ground at one point… There’s also the fact that I have it on PC, so I can’t use Tails to fly on 2-Player without playing Finger Twister on the keyboard.
I love the adventure games!! I hope this game will somekind of a sonic adventure 4 feeling:P
oh, and btw….
I wanna ask a question…I really need to knowXD
Wikipedia said that the Wii version of sonic unleashed also will have a gamecube controler option…..is this true????
@HoggerTheHedgehog: Yep, it’ll be able to use the Gamecube controller, as explained in the scans above.
wow that was strange my last comment didnt do the @username thing, sorry bout that i must hav clicked something i meant
@Moonshadow Caz:
I often hear the grunts, yells and music more than most people, because I’m quite an auditory person. So they’re probably going to bother me in the game, Just like the voices in Sonic Heroes when you changed the Team Leader.
@Chaos Blast:
I forgot to mention, I think he says “Yeah!” every time you engage a boost. Which is going to be a lot. Oh Joy. XD
@Umiyuri: Um…
All you have to do is spin dash to get away from the tree…
@Chaos Blast: Yeah, I’m ok with Grunts every time you switch a rail, but the “YEAH!” anytime he does anything will be kind of annoying.
Also, Were-sonic doesn’t sound much like a werewolf.
I can’t imagine how dumb it’ll sound hearing Jason’s voice coming out of Were-sonic’s mouth when he roars. (when he fist transforms into were-sonic in the opening scene)
*Shivers*
this better not be like sonic the hedgehog next gen where it looked good at first but when it came out it sucked horribly
OMG THEY CALL HIM EGGMAN CUZ AN EGG TURNED HIM EVIL
WDF MY WORLD JUST TURNED UPSIDE DOWN
I THOUGHT THEY CALLED HIM EGG CUZ HE WAS SHAPED LIKE A EGG HAHA
DANG I WATCHED THE HISTORY OF SONIC THING THAT BLEW MY FREAKIN MIND LOL
IM DEFINITELY GETTING SONIC UNLEASHED NOW HAHA
and im glad sega tryin to bring sonic back WITH BLACK KNIGHT & stuff
hes all they got
LETS SUPPORT SEGA
LONG LIVE SONIC da FREAKIN HEDGEHOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Spittingup:
It might not be Jason himself roaring, they might use a digitally-created one. You never know, keep your hopes up. ;)
@Chaos Blast: Hey if Jason can do Shadow then he can roar ok?
im JUST SAYIN.
if this game is anything like sa2 or sa2b, then it better have chao!! but even if it doesn’t, it’ll still be a cool game!!
@KC Cross: The rotten egg thing came from the British Fleetway comic… I dunno if there is really any one set origin story for Sonic, Eggman/Robotnik, etc. American Archie comics had a Dr. Kintobor story as well.
@Spittingup: Also Jason Griffith did Metal Sonic in Sonic Heroes
He roared in that
it’ll prolly sound the same
@KC Cross:
Are you kidding?
@Spittingup: DAMN! I’m better at the plots and the artwork and the music then the games themselves… except Sonic Riders 1 & 2. Then I rock. XP
@KC Cross: Err… Ryan voiced Metal.
Anyway, they’ll most likely have gotten him to do the best roar he can (they probably all cracked up too) and then digitally modified it like Metal’s voice for Sonic Heroes. I doubt they’re going to use the Gojira roar this time, like they did for Perfect Chaos, Final Hazard and Metal Overlord.
They seem to like the idea of pitting Sonic against huge lizard things, don’t they?
@silver_the_hedgehog: Dude, SA2 and SA2B are the same game! The Gamecube version is more touched up and the controls are a bit weird for me, since I have the original Dreamcast version.
@KC Cross: Dude, chill. That’s Great Britain’s take on Sonic. It’s WAY different here in America.
@Spittingup: Yeah, I know. After I play through in English, I’m gonna play it in Japanese. Thank God for my brother getting the 360!
@Umiyuri: well they both sound the same
everyone needs to realize that the voice doesn’t make sonic
SONIC MAKES SONIC.
geez.
@KC Cross: But it keeps every extreme fan debating, lol.
On-Topic: This only confirms that Sonic Unleashed will be good, if not, great.
the best game ever
Have the newer games gotten this good previews?
Many sites/magazines seem to be really positive about this title..
@KC Cross: WORD! True, Sonic makes Sonic, not the Voice itself, its the Character, nothing else! He´s still blue, he´s still fast, he´s still Sonic … any other words? No? Just as I thought! *smiles*
@Rox: You forgot his personality. How dare you forget that?
@David Leggett: Right, there is no magical bullet. You have to get your cred back gradually, and it appears that SEGA is handling it that way. Also, SEGA/Sonic Team can’t just bend to the demands of one group, they have to put everybody into the equation. If they rebooted the series to just Sonic, Knuckles, Tails and Eggman…and possibly Amy and just 16-bit gameplay, then that will get a LOAD of people upset. It’s always been “We’re going to make a game that tries to have a balance between all of the elements that Sonic fans love and attempt to introduce a new element for Sonic!” …now it seems to be “We’re going to make a game that tries to have a balance between all of the elements that Sonic fans love and attempt to introduce a new element for Sonic…and if they don’t like the latter and whine like little babies, that’s their problem. Can’t they be a bit more mature about it?”
Sonic Team has been introducing new gameplay elements since Sonic 2, and for some reason, people only started to get EXTREMELY aggravated about it when Sonic Heroes came out. The idea is to make said elements WORK. Fast paced swordplay and platforming could work. Speed based platforming gameplay and slower, fighting, exploration and precision platforming based gameplay balanced with each other could work. It depends on the time given for it and the work put into it.
@Sonication: X-Play was giving Sonic games somewhat decent reviews until they dedicated part of an episode to Shadow’s game and then in a later show actually reviewed the game… and gave him a 1 out of 5. It’s not really that big a deal, they usually end up giving the games that they focus more time on than other games worse scores when they actually get to them…the only real exception was God of War, I think. They gave Sonic and the Secret Rings one of the worse scores the game had, a 2 out of 5, and that was mostly because of the soundtrack. I think they called it…synth pop? It sure didn’t sound like synth-pop. I would’ve prefered all of the stage songs be instrumental, but Runblebee did a decent job of it.
@Umiyuri: Yeah, I think that the variety of different storylines that Sonic has been in has caused more of this division when it comes to Sonic…makes you wonder where the franchise would’ve been it it was more straightforward…
I think that the Earth that Sonic is in in the current century, but given a shot in the arm with much more advanced technology and much more fantastic locales…I mean, 50 or so years ago, we were just starting the space program, when in Sonic’s world, they had their own freakin’ space colony. The technology that was the basis for Extreme Gear had existed for thousands of years…not to mention the manipulation of Chaos energy for destructive weaponry, the mecha of Eggman and G.U.N and the alternative energy sources, like the energy that Eggman was using his robots to leech off of Megapolis (sp?) in Sonic Heroes. The Soleanna governments had the means to contain a freakin’ GOD and were planning experiments to facilitate time travel…then they actually did said experiments…and it didn’t end well. They just COULDN’T wait for the Little Planet to align and collect the Time Stones couldn’t they? XD
Somebody inform this bozo to quit taking it so freakin’ seriously, kthanxbai I sure hope I don’t end up like that anytime soon.
@Rox:
Here’s something I wish to show about the voices:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xHFLhykf7s
Sega can’t please everyone, so they try to please the majority, and even then people will still complain. I don’t think people give them much credit, because they’ve had a lot more hits in the past than the misses they’ve had recently. They’ve only had a couple not-so-good games, and even after Sonic ‘06 is given the title of “worst Sonic game”, SATSR and Sonic Rush 2 were great games. Sega’s still on its way back, a lot of people just haven’t noticed it yet.
@Lamb84: True, true, true.
@Kev: *spews Coca-Cola out of nose* Review of the game in Octobor? Will this thing be released SOONER? …Well, Werehog makes it the sort of game that could be released on the 31, but I’d rather them take their time.
…Unbiased review from The Sonic Stadium…uh, yeah, right, because they’re TOTALLY an unbiased news source these days. :P
GAH! GAH! My nostrils are burning. Soft drinks! Bad choice in liquid to spew out of your nostrils in surprise/shock! D:
The only problem about Jason is how fake he sounds. He is getting better at it.
I saw an episode of Chaotic once…
if you compare the voices of Sonic Riders ZG/Olimpic games with 06/Chaotic, you can tell he is getting better. The main problem was that Ryan already perfected Sonic’s voice, which is why people didn’t like the change.
They sound different…but until I went online, I never really noticed the voice changes lol.
Oh, and having an unbiased review isn’t TECHNICALLY possible. Bias affects everyone…we just like to pretend it doesn’t. That said, people can work against their bias by TRYING to favor what you’re biased against. Ergo…if you’re pessimistic…try to look for the positives as much as you can. That way, you’ve tried to check your bias. And vice-versa, as well.
Biased: I knew this game would suck, and I turned it off after 10 minutes. This is horrible! …..
Unbiased: I tried to like this game, but I couldn’t. etc etc
Even then, bias creeps in. Which is why the important thing about journalism is being informative, not opinionated. Give people enough information to decide if the purchase is worth it.
Actually, I’m ranting LOL. Everyone’s opinion is valuable, I’ll be reading lots of reviews. But you have to read between the lines, not just see “This is great!” or “This sucks” based on a number or letter grade.
@iNAUDiBLE: yeah Shadzter at Sonic Stadium said that GamesMaster’s next issue released August 27th will have a review of the game it’s gonna be their october issue but i dunno how they’re getting it this… early i was surprised too the game is definitely coming out November but let’s see what they think of the game after playing it themselves who know’s maybe they got a demo with a bunch of levels? and we might get a demo soon if it’s true
@Kev: They’re doing a review for the 360 and PS3 versions in October cuz the 360 and PS3 versions come out in October.
Here’s Proof:
360 version: http://videogames.yahoo.com/xbox360/sonic-unleashed/
PS3 version: http://videogames.yahoo.com/ps3/sonic-unleashed/
Now notice on the left of the two sites the realease dates.
metal sonic in heroes was an altered ryan and who care about jason now lets just listen to Junich spelling please
@Sonication: That video is the second most sensible rant in the entire Sonic community. Thank you for linking it, and thanks to the person who made it.
Am I getting sick of voice rants? Yes.
Jason is Sonic whether you guys like him or not. I personally do like him and I’m actually alright with most 4Kids censorship – they just do it to live up to their company name, and US censors on children’s television are notoriously difficult to get past. True, some of the localising of names is a bit dumb, but I like it when they preserve at least part of the name (Gary Oak’s name from ‘Shi-geru-’).
If you haven’t noticed, the games got many reviews that put down the SA voice cast. For example, SA2 has some alright voice direction for people who weren’t allowed to see the scenes they were dubbing, but when you put it to the sequence it actually sounds terrible. Hence why I tend to play the SA series in Japanese more than I play it in English.
Ryan was a good actor, but it’s been three or four years already. If they didn’t listen early on, they’re not gonna listen now. Jason is pretty comfortable where he is right now, so I doubt he wants to move even with all the complaining and whining fans do. Jason has a lot of fun doing this job, and enjoys every project he works on.
If people argue that fan-voices are better, you have to realise that Jason is actually a big fan of the Sonic games, so technically, he -is- a fan-voice. He just got hired. Which reminds me – if the fan-voices actually end up doing the job, they’re not fan-voices anymore. So people end up disliking them.
@Crazee:
I agree with your statement so much. Until I went online, I didn’t even know the voices changed. If you notice, when Sonic says “woahhhh” it sounds exactly the same. If I didn’t read internet posts, I probably wouldn’t of ever noticed that Sonic sounded “different.”
With that being said… I think some arguments are internet exclusive. The odds of running into a friend, or someone across the street that’d actually “complain” about Sonic’s voice is rare.
And Gamespot’s… original Sonic Adventure review… “the quirky voices keep you playing for a while.” The gamecube Sonic Adventure review… “awful voices….” But I know quite a bit of people that like Sonic games, and “voices” is the last thing they’d ever complain about.
Honestly, some of you must have serious problems with Disney or Nickeledeon. But the fact that EVERY and I mean EVERY Japanese cartoon series has people online complaining about voices, I actually found those complaints a bit useless. Regardless, they could say “this guy, should do that voice…” you find complaints somewhere else complaining about that “other” voice.
I am sick of the voice rants, but I think the majority of the complaints are online. Else, there’d be an onslaught of riots against Nickeledeon & Powerpuff Girls… in which… I’d find such complaints utterly ridiculous.
@Spittingup:
People complained about the voices since Sonic Adventure. I hope you realize that.
And about your comment on Jason sounding, “fake,” I’ll start off by stating how identical the voices sound to me, and confirm my idea that people like you must have a serious problems with most Nickelodeon and Disney cartoons.
@Spittingup:
IGN and GAMESPOT actually bashed the Sonic Adventure voices more than they do the Shadow the Hedgehog/Sonic 06 voices.
INFACT, since the 4kids voice change, some reviewers seem to bash less. Many other reviewers are UNAWARE there was a change in voices in the first place. IGN’s Sonic Riders confirms that by saying the voices are what you’d expect from a Sonic game.
Personally, I’m sick of the voice rants, and as I said before; some people must have serious problems with most Disney/Nick cartoons; judging by their words.
@no: Um…
Have you ever watched Chaotic?
and what do you mean PEOPLE LIKE YOU? Your saying you know exactly who I am and what I act like? You assume that just because I noticed the change in voices that I’m part of the APHVGCCV? the Association of People who Hate Video Game Characters and Cartoon Voices? I personally (like I said before) do not hate Jason’s voice for Sonic. It’s actually doing good.
Again, Chaotic. His voice is so fake it’s the only reason I sometimes watch it. It’s actually pretty funny.
and I don’t care about IGN or Gamespot. I will watch to see what X-play rates it. They don’t seem to rate any sonic games good.
@Crazee: Yeah…that is the sort of thing you have to put into consideration.
@Umiyuri: One of the things is that they tend to dub series from Japanese that are shonen…meant for middle schoolers. A bit more violent, meaning more edits are needed and when edits are needed, fanboys go RAWR. The series Dinosaur King was intended for a younger audience than those for regular shonen series in Japan, and didn’t need as much editing…so people had said that the dub for that series is more “faithful”.
Coincidentally, Dinosaur King is an anime based on a SEGA arcade machine that dispenses collectable dinosaur cards that you can put into the machine to have 3D battles against another kid’s dinosaur cards. They also have Mushiking, which is the same thing involving varieties of beetles and a girl’s equivalent…don’t know that much about it, but it involves fashion in some fashion. I’m more interested in the dinosaurs to be honest. All the different clothing combinations for a person to put on a character on a card must have been a logistical nightmare.
Well, the voices for Sonic Adventure didn’t fit the flap at all…considering they couldn’t see the scenes when they did it. The 4kids voices fit the flap, and I actually managed to tolerate most of the voices (except for Erazor Djinn)….I hadn’t really watched Sonic X enough to know what to expect from them. I was personally concerned about whether they actually put the time and enjoyed their work. If Jason actually enjoys the series and if he actually does put the effort in as you say, then I suppose that there’s not really much that I could say in terms of not liking him. Mike Pollack does a great job as Eggman…although he has said that he hasn’t played the games or read the comics, I suppose that could change. He was the only 4kids voice actor who had an interest in reprising their role in the games until Sonic Team brought them all in. …Ugh, its so pointless sometimes, I’d rather them fix the gameplay then work their way down. >___>;;
@Kev: If they give them a demo build, then I wonder how things will turn out…maybe it’s a preview and not a review? Eh, let’s just wait and find out.
Man, this game looks great! I love the artwork shown in the magazine of were-sonic and sonic. I hope this game doesn’t turn out to be rushed like Sonic 06′.
So far so good.
Tokyo Game Show is next month, right? Maybe a playable demo will be available then.
