Sonic Unleashed… Box art?

Never trust a box folks.

Yesterday, MKSkillz sent us a link to Play.com showing off what might be the Sonic Unleashed Box art.  While we always appreciate the heads up — we don’t always post about leads if there doesn’t seem to be enough substance behind them.

I think we might need to take a step back here.  While this certainly looks compelling, I’m going to suggest that this might not be the official art for the game.  It could be.  But folks are jumping to conclusions it seems.

If you want my honest opinion, the “Box Art” in question looks like it could be a Photoshop mock-up.  I know it’s on Amazon, so it must be official, right!? Well, not so much, as Amazon allows users to upload their own product images, and it’s not rare to see placeholders for upcoming games in online stores like this.

So in short, I don’t mean to be raining on this parade, but I do think we should take one tiny step back and wait for the official word from SEGA before making any final judgment calls here.

  1. the background looks boring, they should put like a place in the game, an important place, like say… EARTH. i like the idea of just sonic in the boxart. Never been a fan of the other characters in the sonic universe, i think there should only be sonic, eggman, tails, knuckles, and mayb amy, but she shouldn’t be a playable character. but those r just my thoughts

    @UmbreonTheDark:
The sonic picture could have been from the Game Master magazine

  3. sonic 06 August 13, 2008

    Or better the psm3 magazine

  4. hmm.. that does look very legit.. I think it is real boxart though Sonic on the left side kind of looks like Sonic from the box art of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Gmaes

  5. UmbreonTheDark August 13, 2008

@RaveToTheGrave: Well, kinda….In the boxart of Mario and Sonic, his hand positioning is different, the perspective is more the side, the shoe is different as well, and his smile would be on the left side, in other words you’ll see a smile on the Sonic side of this boxart. But other than that your kinda right, it looks a bit similar. :)

  6. mayb this boxart was done in paint, they just copied parts (like the shoes, hand, weresonic hair) and pasted them over the sonic from the olympic games, and then they did that background. i’m just saying it b/c my cousin can do that very nicely, although she isn’t into sonic very much.

  7. Golden~Hedgy August 13, 2008

it does look kinda accurate but who knows…. sick people like to trick others by abusing their Photoshop power…. >.>

  8. It looks verrrry official to me…

But I think I might have caught somethings that proves me wrong.

The pic with Sonic & the Werehog running together. I think Sonics arm is from that picture. The Werehog arm on the box art flipped could be the Werehog Arm from that pic. Also the Sonic/Werehog head on the box looks like that comparison head from a while back.

And did anyone catch how similar this pose looks to the one Sonic used on the Mario & Sonic @ The Olympic Games box art?

It could very well be a excellent Photoshop as well…

..but I’m making these comparisons as I see them, so they could be wrong or correct. I have no Idea.

  9. @RGamer: you just might be right those are very good observations, i think that the cover is very cool and detailed has a sonic feel but looks very suspicious let’s compare it to mario and sonic at the olympics
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/07/technology_enl_1175084658/img/1.jpg

    and sonic unleashed boxart

    http://gonintendo.com/?p=52431

when u compare they look the same but.. where would the person who made the “fake” (if it is ) cover get the werehog part?

  10. after looking closely compare the sonic half to other unleashed sonic renders and you’ll find that they’re similar style therefore i think that sega did make this and it’s real

  11. wat do u think will be the rating for SU in america? so far it is RP (rating pending)

  12. About the S&M pose, It does look slightly similar, but there are still differences;

~ His eyes are a slightly different shape, in the S&M boxart they where more rounded at the top
~ The fist trailing from Sonic in this one is clenched, in the other it is not.
~ The Shading is completely different.
~ On the S&M, Sonic’s chest leans slightly to the left, on this it does not.
~ The sole of Sonic’s shoe has a lot more detail on this boxart.

  13. Shadiwulf August 13, 2008

Its real, its popping up allover Online stores in the UK, they are getting it off SEGA Europe’s FTP which the public has no access to.

  14. @KC Cross: Woah! that’s awesome great job!

  15. Hero of legend August 13, 2008

I used MS Paint to make a NA version of the Wii box:

    Hope you like it!

  16. why would SEGA do a boxart that is so similiar to another one? I mean, that’s not cool. I like KC Cross’s better.

  17. @Hero of legend u forgot the nintendo wi-fi connection logo, but other than that, looks nice

  18. Hero of legend August 13, 2008

    @someone

Problem is, we don’t know if the Wii version supports it or not! :’(

Also, if my link is broken, that’s because I deleted the image, so I can re-upload it as a .png image!

  19. i think david’s right. but whoever made this good thing they actually used things from the game instead of from other sonic games. i like it in my opinion but 7+? no i don’t think it’s going to be rated that low.

  20. I think SU will be rated at leaste E 10+, just b/c of the werehog

  21. As great as the Sonic transition into the werehog is, the background of the boxart kind of sucks IMO. =/

I’m not saying his is real either however i’m going to guess that it is due to the fact that there are no pictures of Sonic or the werehog running like that. Unless some EXTREMELY talented artist was able to copy Sonic Team’s art style (or howevers).

  22. the box top has a high chance of bieng the official cover for sonic unleashed because you see it every were on the internet

  23. wait a sec, isn’t weresonic supposed to run fast on 4’s? if so, how could he run like fast like that? unless sonic us running slow then mayb… but i don’t think so. hmmmm…

  24. The Guy Known as "Anonymous" August 13, 2008

I really wouldn’t mind this being the boxart, but I highly doubt this will be it. Anyone notice that neither Sonic Team’s nor Dimps’ logos are on there?

  25. SonicRulez August 13, 2008

@someone: Well, if you may have seen in the Mykonos Night gameplay on Gamespot, the Werehog can run on 2’s but you can also press a button to make him run faster on 4’s.

  26. SonicRulez August 13, 2008

@The Guy Known As Anonymous: Well on the Sonic Rush Adventure box it didn’t have Dimps’ logo, but it was still made by Dimps.

  27. The Guy Known as "Anonymous" August 13, 2008

Oh, I missed the comment about the other logos being on the back. I still don’t really think this will be it, though.

  28. KC Cross August 13, 2008

@someone: @Hero of legend: @BlueBlur: If no one told you guys yet

all you gotta do is click the arrow on the right of a comment

and write yur message to them

@The Guy Known as “Anonymous”: see?

  29. True. It’s way too soon to be jumping to conclusions, but I must admit. It DOES look real.

  30. RockerDuDe August 13, 2008

it looks fake to me SEGA can do better than that and in my opinio the one of KC Cross is better…..

hey guys check out my info video of sonic and the black knight it has pictures too :) please check it out

    here is the link= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu_z4SHZF88

  31. The PS3 has only the PEGI, playstation 3 and SEGA logo whereas the wii version has that nad the PAL logo.

  32. @KC Cross: lol thanks, ur box art is better than the other one

  33. Looks way too official to be a photoshop stunt.

Hate to sound rather negative but it’s getting rather old with people saying it’s edited, or fake. Gees, how many times I’ve heard this?

Oh wait, Sonic & The Black Knight is a hugely big example. Everyone though the cover on Nintendo Power was just a lie, or a Twilight Princess parody. Few weeks later it claim to be a actual game.

I mean, look at Sonic Chronicles box art. It’s simple, yet pretty detailed in coloring. I don’t hear anyone spazzing out over it.

  34. MetalshadowN64 August 13, 2008

I’d say it looks legit. But let’s not jump to conclusions. I don’t think SEGA is gonna get cocky enough to make a box art so early.

But to stay on the safe side, let’s consider it legit until SEGA truly releases something, and if not… Well then we got ourselves a legit boxart.

  35. PrincessTikal August 13, 2008

come on. sonic team can do a better job than that for box art.

  36. @MetalshadowN64: It could be a graphic for inside the Manual.

But to give a good example on prints like that…

I mean, I do this in real life.

They get a design, right? Well, depending how much color they can use and color is more expensive then black & white.

They might of lessen the amount of going on on the cover just to be a bit fair on the bill. I mean, all that cging and editing does cost a pretty penny.

But CG is luckily more cheaper then hand drawn art.

Oh, to say something too. That isn’t a edited Mario and Sonic at the Olympic game pose. I had a good look at it and Sonic has his head tilt up more high, and etc. Plus his detail is more higher res in this. Sonic is more simplified in Mario & Sonic. Just to make a point.

  37. The question is, the picture of Sonic used in the boxart, has it been revealed prior to the revealing of this box art? because how would a fan obtain the image if it never existed before?

  38. @PlatformerUpdate: Yeah, it appeared on the UK amazon site for pre-ordering.

Plus this game is made by Sega of Japan, pretty much their going to be seeing it first. If I’m right on that.

  39. Michal Shipman August 13, 2008

To support others here, if this render of Sonic hasn’t been publicly released, then don’t expect it to be a fan art. But like others are saying, It’s not official, definitely something you would see at a gamestop for preordering for sure.

  40. BlueBlur August 13, 2008

@Michal Shipman: It does look like it could be a box art image thats used for pre-ordering but i havent heard of any shops putting sonic unleashed up for pre-order

  41. BlueBlur August 13, 2008

KC Cross i just looked at segas sonic unleashed website and they have a picture that is exactly the same as your box art could you be a cheat dun-dun-dun

  42. BlueBlur August 13, 2008

    @KC Cross:

    Thanks for the tip

  43. BlueBlur August 13, 2008

I’ve got a link for the site here http://www.sega.com/gamesite/sonicunleashed/

  44. Michal Shipman August 13, 2008

One last thing, this is the European Box Art preview, not U.S.

  45. Regardless, It seems to be a very well Photoshopped image that gets the basic gist of what Sonic Unleashed is all about. Sonic during the day, WereHog by night.
But I honestly think SEGA can do better if this isn’t the real deal…
    hopefully… :)

  46. @BlueBlur: Oh wow, much more better than Sonic standing with his hand on his hip with the world being destroyed behind him if you ask me! :D

  47. BlueBlur August 13, 2008

This, in my opinion, is one of the most amazing articles on campsonic because its created so many posts arguments and debates over 1 picture.

  48. Hero of Mobious August 13, 2008

Well it does look AWSOME and it looks professional but i don`t think this is the real deal
