New Sonic Unleashed Gameplay Videos from TGS

Note from the Editor: Some news was posted later than intended in an effort to catch up with important Sonic Unleashed happenings.

A couple of suprising gameplay videos were filmed today at TGS ‘08. including a brand new Sonic Unleashed Wii Video! Sonic’s ball form is shown in the Europe stage, whereas the Light Dash is heard, but not seen, in Greece (on the 360). There are multiple TV’s Running this game in the background, so don’t think Sonic’s yelling random things. A common worry was “Will the Wii version look good?” Well, let the video answer your question:

And here is the Sonic Unleashed Wii Gameplay:

Looking pretty slick!

  1. Whoo an update :3

    Videoes are looking good

  2. @Cazza: Yup, sorry for the late announcements. Catching up again :)

We’ll be working on some awesome guides once Sonic Unleashed is released!

  3. SpeedingHedgehog October 18, 2008

Sweet! Now you can tell it takes some talent to play SU!

  4. SpeedingHedgehog October 18, 2008

    Wait… this ain’t from Tokyo!

  5. Dragonite October 18, 2008

    nice,a update.
    Are less busy now,David?

    Wii version looks pretty slick.
Not as much as the xbox/ps3 version, but it still looks FAST.

I wonder what the story behind the spindash is..
    How is it activated?

  6. @Dragonite: i’m guessing that it happens when u go at full speed, cuz it only gets activated AFTER one of those gray blocks on the floor. the ones that give u a boost.

  7. Guy in the shadows October 18, 2008

    Nice videos, very nice indeed.
The jump sound sounds really different. I dunno why I didn’t notice it before, but it sounds really different.
    Good thing or bad thing?
    Does anyone care?

  8. that ps3 version looks kinda hard to control, and the ring-gathering looks kinda cheesey, but HOLY CRAP, the Wii version looks good. Perhaps better than the ps3 one. My fears are somewhat lessened overall.

  9. @Frog:
WHAT? IT’S THE MOST EASIEST EVER IN CONSOLES

2nd Thing The Control Style is old since playstation 1 and anybody who continues with the PS Franchise can control even easier!!!

  10. dragonite October 18, 2008

0:25 on video 1 has some good invisible wall action.
Bumping into it was the players fault trough.
The players aren’t that bright on average.
Lol video 2 going in reverse a few times.
    That is just…not smart.

  11. Sweet David is Back.

The question is right now for the Light Dash is does it come attomatically with you (like Sonic Heroes) or do you have to find it(like Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Adventure 2)

  12. @Frog: are you on drugs? you onestly think that the wii graphics look better than ps3?

  13. jorenmartijn October 18, 2008

@devin: I agree with Frog on that it looks good, but I don’t see large differences between PS3 and Wii in terms of graphics. And Nintendo and Sega are releasing some cool games I need to get this and next year, namely Wario Land Wii, Sonic Unleashed Wii version (of course!) and Sonic and the Black Knight (Wii exclusive and looks very well done in the graphics department! :))

  14. the wii version looks the same as the 360 and PS3….

  15. sonicsmashkirby October 18, 2008

guys there a whole bunch of screenshots from here the cutscennes http://wii.kombo.com/media.php?gameid=1831&type=1

  16. Hey guys in the wii day and night trailer it showed the same boss as the china stage one. Ether dimps chaged the boss line up, or were going to have the same boss through the Whole game.

Also I know that the 360 will have different bosses. watch the 4 squares of the E3 trailer.

  17. Was wondering when you guys would update. Oh well, I understand that things happen and we can’t always get to our computers when we want to.

But yeah, the Sonic Unleashed trailer that was released about….what….yesterday, I think? Anyways, the new trailer is fantastic.

  18. @ David: How are classes? Man, it’s hard to believe we’ve been on CS this long awaiting the game. It’s nice to see my prediction of the polar level is coming true. Now, for Australia….wait for it…

haha. Welcome back, for as long as you’re here.

  19. TrueBlueJ7 October 18, 2008

I never thought I’d say this, but the Wii version seems a lot more fun than the 360 version. :) The quality loks better than in earlier screenshots. When I was watching it for the first time, I thought “Nah, they made a mistake, this isn’t Wii. Oh wait, it is! The hub, the rings… Wow…”

Sonic’s rolling on the ground! :D

If this is isn’t the game that will make Sonic more popular, the next one will definitely be. The next canon 3D or 2D title, not Sonic and the Black Knight.

But SBK looks pretty good too. The sword gameplay looks fun, the game will have both 2D and 3D and it won’t be on-rails. I hope SEGA goes on with this roll of improvements. ;)

  20. dudewithtude October 18, 2008

I’ve been waiting to see the wii gameplay for a long time and it seems better than my expectations. As long as the game keeps to its old-fashion style of play, then I’ll be happy to play it. The Wii version looks more fun than the 360 version, but are the cutscenes going to look the same?

  21. Sonic's Clone x345 October 18, 2008

Hmm, I might stop subscribing because sonicunleashedinfo of youtube fills in more info.

  22. lxMetalSonicxl October 18, 2008

How are the Wii graphics the same as the 360/PS3 one? Maybe it’s because you guys are looking on the computer and not a HD TV since I can see the individual pixels on the Wii. The Wii gameplay also looks too straight forward and easy to me. I’ll stick with the 360 one.

  23. DEMO PARTY!!

    lol

  24. sonicsmashkirby October 18, 2008

    demo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DEMO PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DEMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DEMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. The only reason some people might watch the wii trailer and think somehow it looks as good as the ps3 and 360 versions is that they are watching all of the videos in poor quality. If you watch all the videos in high quality by going to gametrailers or downloading directly from Sega’s FTP site you are able to see that the graphics for the wii version are very jagged and choppy compared to something like, Super Mario Galaxy even, which hasn’t the least bit of a jagged edge. The ps3 and 360 versions have full global illumination, the transitions from 2d to 3d are smoother and the hedgehog engine is definetly worth something here…the game looks like CG when its actually real time! PS3×360 for the win! Wii is cool too, but its just a fast but old modified engine…..

  26. @Shiko: I agree that the 360/PS3 graphics are better, but I think the Wii Engine is just as good.

I’m getting the 360 version, in MY opinion, it’s the best one!

  27. dog@bird.net October 18, 2008

    @Sonikku Master:
The Wii engine is an updated engine from one of the previous Sonic games. The most “previous” game is probably Sonic Riders… so it may be an updated Sonic Riders engine…

  28. dog@bird.net (email me now) October 18, 2008

Wait, Sonic and the Secret rings came after Sonic Riders? Could this be an updated engine of that game? Sega did say they are using an existing engine for the Wii version.

  29. @sonicsmashkirby: The Sonic Unleashed demo will probably be larger than the Next-Gen demo, and I can’t download huge stuff like that as I have slow internet…

:( Looks like I’ll have to wait until the full release!

  30. Oops… don’t know why I posted that as a reply…

  31. I think the only reason Next-Gen was glitchy and weird was due to the Havok Physics Engine. The Hedgehog Engine is MUCH better!

  32. One thing I found REALLY annoying about Next-Gen was that you don’t speed up while running down slopes!

Anyone know why they made him slow in the normal action stages? My guess is to keep the frame rate as best as possible… Any suggestions?

  33. I like how the levels in the Wii version appear very massive. Even the pates Sonic takes feel like they have so much room to move around or to even make mistakes.

looks like Wii owners have more reason to be excited about Sonic Unleashed now ^_^

  34. I think Unleashed on Wii is hurt graphically by the fact that Sonic’sb worlds are larger and more detailed than a game like Mario Galaxy. Galaxy can have limited areas that are VERY detailed. Unleashed’s levels are very large with multiple paths and lifelike enviorments. That’s more taxing to a system than small planetoids, regardless of the beauty of those planets.

Also, seeing that the Greece and Arab levels look better on the Wii than High Europe does… I think this proves that. The backgrounds on those levels have less variety and therefore look more solid and impressive. Wii Apotos doesn’t look THAT different from 360 Apatos. Wii allows colorful designs to make up for the lack of lighting. It really will depend on the level, I guess.

Forget it, though. I’m buying both versions.lol

  35. the wii version doesn’t have bad graphics, it’s just that the PS3 version has better ones. but it still looks nice, for a wii game…

  36. i saw this awhile back

  37. :.Unleashed.: October 18, 2008

I must say the Wii version may not match the PS3/360 graphically, but it definitely looks funner!

  38. I think all versions (except PS2 which we haven’t seen) will be equally enjoyable! :)

I think the PS2 version will be a bit like Sonic Adventure. I hope the frame rate is good though; Xbox and Gamecube usually have a better frame rate.

    I have a choice of getting it for PS2 or 360. I CHOOSE 360!
    (DUH!)

  39. I hope the wii version also has downloadable content

  40. @Crazee: has there been africa wii footage? O_O

  41. @Shiko: not that i know off…

  42. @ Sonikku master: Is your game updated? I remember trying it a couple months back.

@ Shiko: Nah. But there’s been pictures of the Wii version of Shamar.

  43. dog@bird.net October 18, 2008

Dragonite is so cool! He is so cool!

But, I need to tell you guys something.

When Sonic 2 came, I always thought Sonic ran so slow. I watched Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and I always wanted a way to go fast. Sonic had the spindash, but it never felt fast because Sonic was rolling, not running.

After watching the Sonic cartoons, I always wanted a way for Sonic to dash and go fast without rolling. I am glad Sonic is finally fast like the cartoons.

  44. Mastergames October 19, 2008

This was heart warming to me to see all of this gameplay thank you for posting it.
